Disco Style and Holiday Hair at London Fashion Week

Posted by Kate
Dated: September 18, 2008 5:47 PM

From androgynous pinned up hair; to 50s style head scarves and summer holiday hair; it was a boundary-pushing day for the TONI&GUY Team at London Fashion Week.

Tasked with creating catwalk hair to complement a variety of collections, including Avsh Alom Gur and Betty Jackson, the team came up with intricate shapes and stunning textures to add the finishing touch.

Wednesday 17th September

Avsh Alom Gur
Inspired by 1950's upholstery - fun oversized prints, using a palette of bold primary shades of predominantly blue and red, taking reference from Karate belts.  Rigid fabrics, cinched-in waists and voluminous layered skirts achieve the perfect 50s silhouette.

A 1940s holiday in Capri, think Gina Lollobrigida and Eva Gardner. This is a ladylike beach holiday so colourful head scarves and retro prints are a must.

The hair was brushed forward, to help secure into a top knot at the front of the head, leaving out a fringe section.  The ponytail was tonged and brushed out heavily.  The ponytail was then pinned into a very natural, loose curl piled on the head towards the front for a 40s feel.  Accessory details, such as head scarves or small clips, were added for a retro effect.

Must-have session kit
Digital control tongs, cushion brush, gips and pins, volume mousse and a mist of hairspray.

OTT summer holiday

Cooperative Designs
A playful knitwear collection, with a nod to the 80s. Vivid stripe details dominated sculpted dresses, in a multitude of colours; including orange, summer yellow, muted grey and neon pink.  A fusion of loose and fitted tailoring with insinuated subtle undertones of ethnicity.

Hair was divided into sections, with a focus on a square box section on top of the head, which was sub-plaited and sewn down using colourful thread.  The rest of the hair was pulled back into a ponytail and secured and the middle of the head and was then backcombed using fingers for a soft, scooped affect rather than a matted finish.

Must-have session kit
Pintail comb, needle, coloured thread,  Cushion Brush, hairspray, sea salt spray, shine mist.

FAD
Made up from 20 individual designer collections - the focus was all about contemporary China, with lots of structure and forward thinking silhouettes, teamed with a vast palette of bold brights.

Complementing the umbrella theme of contemporary China, the hair was kept clean, simple and glassy, styling away from the face to keep a focus on the collections and maintain a unified look.

Must-have session kit
Round hot brush, pintail comb, needle, grips, pins, volume mousse, hairspray, shine mist, hair polish and wax stick (for afro hair).
