The lucky winner, David Roche of Synergy Hairdressing in Poole, tells us what he thought of the course.
Last month, we gave away a place on Michael Barnes' long hair course at the Academy in Mayfair.
Where was the course?
At Goldwell's Academy. It was a really nice location, equipped with absolutely everything we needed. As there were only three of us on the course Michael was able to be so much more hands on.
What were the highlights of the course?
Michael was a really cool guy, who told us lots about what he had been up to and gave us all something to aspire to. He showed us some of the work he has done with Keira Knightley and Kelly Brook and talked to us about their hair and how he works it. Also, the model was one of the girls from Scooch, who represented England in the Eurovision song contest a few years back, so that made me laugh! The course itself was was truly inspirational and different to anything I had ever done before.
What were you hoping to get out of the course?
I wanted to see which route I wanted to go down in my career and I hoped that it would give me a clearer idea.
What did you get out of the course?
It has confirmed my instinct that I really wanted to get into session styling and doing hair for the catwalk and fashion shoots. The great thing is that now I have a clear idea of what I want to do I've been able to speak to my boss about it and she has promised she will do everything she can to help me achieve it. Micheal showed us some really simple but effective ways of putting hair up and recommended some shows that we could get involved in, so that was great too.
Is there one thing you will definitely take back to the salon?
There were a few techniques that I can use on normal hair up for a messy yet wearable look, which I will definitely pass on to the girls in the salon. We also learned the basket weave, which I can't wait to show off!
Would you recommend the course?
Yes. Most hairdressers are creative people, but this is definitely one for anyone who thinks outside of the box and isn't really conservative in their ideas.
Anything you'd like to add?
Just a big thank you for sending me on the course. I got so much out of it!
Forthcoming Michael Barnes long courses are on Wednesday August 27 and Thursday November 18 at The Academy, Mayfair, priced at £200. Call 020 7318 4000 to book your place.
