  • What is the National Hairdressers’ Federation (NHF)?
The NHF is a member-owned organisation for salon owners and independent contractors operating from business premises in the hair and beauty industry.
  • Who runs it?
The NHF is run by its members and supported by a professional administration department. A 16-strong National Executive Council makes the main decisions and meets at least four times a year. Council representatives are elected to represent local members around the country, and area councils organise and manage the branches in their locality. Areas and branches jointly deliver local services and benefits to members.
  • How many members are there?
    More than 7,000.
  • What are its aims?
To be the premier organisation within the hair and beauty sector that enables members to excel in their business. Its main objectives are: to regulate the formal legal relations between members and their employees; raise hairdressing’s status; create an industry-wide unifying framework; lobby to improve relevant legislation; provide benefits to members; encourage the provision of facilities for technical classes for apprentices and academies for further training and to promote the compulsory registration of hairdressers.
  • How can I become a member?
You must be the owner of either a hairdressing or beauty business operating from recognised business premises. This includes self-employed hairdressers working in salons on a chair-renting basis. Application forms to join can be obtained from its website
    www.nhf.biz or by calling
    0845 345650 or 01234 831965.
  • How much does it cost?
The 2008 subscription rates including VAT, which can be paid annually, quarterly or monthly, are: full members £249.10; registration of extra salons £70.50; chair renters £99.88.
