The World's Sexiest Silver-Tops

Posted by Kate
Dated: November 1, 2007 11:00 AM

Since we launched our forums for hairdressers, My HJi, a recurring theme has been grey hair - yes, it has taken us by surprise too!

From when it arrives - as young as 13 it seems - to what, if anything you should do about it people seem keen to discuss their grey.

Now we're not about to wade into any 'to dye or not to dye' debates but we couldn't resist the opportunity to give our take: the right grey hair on the right person looks pretty darn fine.

Joe Slinger (NVQ level 3) and Mathilde Heather (NVQ level 2) have been named the UK’s hottest student hairdressers.

The pair, along with four other hopefuls, sent their models down the catwalk in front of a live audience and a panel of the industry’s harshest critics at Salon International.

MTV Europe Music Awards Asks All The Right Questions

Dated: November 2, 2007 10:31 AM

I watched the Europe Music Awards last night and the lead singer of the Foo Fighters Dave Grohl asked a selection of superstars what song they wished they had written! What a great question.

So I am asking you: what style do you wish you had created and why? Ruth @HJi x

Amy-Winehouse.jpgThe stars shone at the MTV Europe Music Awards last night.

Tokio Hotel proved that plenty of lacquer and straighteners can create big hair, while Nelly Fertado went blonde for the night.

Amy Winehouse -- despite forgetting the words of her song -- took the award for biggest hair with extensions down her back and an enormous beehive.

Pussycat Girl Nicole Scherzinger also wore long extensions which looked stunning. Overall the theme was sexy rock n' roll -- and the music wasn't bad either!

Cheeky night out for salon stars

Dated: November 2, 2007 11:44 AM

Dated: November 2, 2007 11:44 AM

Extensions company Racoon did its bit for charity this week, sponsoring the Marine Connection’s Safety Nets Ball. And a glittering line-up of Britain’s best-known hairdressers also leant their support.

Guy Kremer, Sean and Claire Dawson, Terry Calvert, Nick Malenko & Royston Blythe, Richard Ward and Errol Douglas all turned out to enjoy the evening, which included an auction of fishnet stockings and string vests designed by stars including Orlando Bloom, Charlotte Church and the Sugababes.

The ‘Babes later performed a brilliant acoustic set, despite the absence of new band member Amelle. Let’s hope her no-show was just down to a cold and the group aren’t planning yet another restructure!

Other celebrities at the Park Lane party included Jodie Marsh and husband Matt Peacock, who canoodled for the cameras, while Cheeky Girl Gabriela was overheard singing the praises of her boyfriend, Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik, to twin sister Monica, under the watchful eye of their ever-present mum.

The Cheekies, dressed in matching, minimal silver-sequinned gowns, later took to the stage to a chorus of Happy Birthday, with footballers’ favourites, model Danielle Lloyd and George’s ex Alex Best, joining in the sing-along.

The event raised funds for the conservation of whales and dolphins.

What Can We Learn From Celebrity Scissorhands?

Dated: November 5, 2007 11:38 AM

Celebrity_Scissorhands.jpgWhen HJi caught up with Lee Stafford before Celebrity Scissorhands 2007 kicked off, he told us he had big plans for the celebrities he was about to transform into hairdressers.

The 'stars' aren't just going to be cutting hair in the salon this year, they will also be putting on a stage show in front of an audience of hairdressers.

And being a perfectionist, Lee wasn't going to settle for mediocrity from his students. "I want them to star on the stage and I don't just want the hairdressers in the audience to be thinking 'I can't believe they have achieved that', I also want them to be thinking 'I can't believe I learned something from them'," he said.

So, one week into the programme what - if anything - can we learn from Celebrity Scissorhands? More than you might suspect...

Making Clients Look '10 Years Younger' - Andrew

Dated: November 6, 2007 7:44 AM

Last weekend in Rome with L'Oreal was fantastic. It was a really good trip, our collection was well received and I met lots of lovely new people.

To be honest, it was a bit of a party weekend and I'm proud to say that partying is one thing that hairdressers do really well when we all get together!

Back home and I've been filming for the next series of 10 Years Younger which is always a lot of hard work, but great fun.

Braving The Dragons' Den - Shaun P's Story

Dragons-Den-Shaun.jpg
Anyone who has ever seen the Dragons' Den will tell you that you either have to have supreme confidence in your product, be completely deluded or just plain desperate to brave the dragons.

It certainly isn't a decision to be taken lightly.

Unless, of course, you are Shaun Pulfrey, who found himself face to face with the fearsome five-some just to get a friend off his case.

"A friend of mine told me to take the Tangle Teezer to the Dragons' Den, but I said I was too busy," explains Shaun. "I was working toward launching at Salon International and I was also Assistant Technical Director at Richard Ward, so I didn't have a spare moment.

"One day, he was bugging the hell out of me. He told me that this series was full so it wouldn't be until next year anyway. So I copied my strap-line, plonked it down on the entry form and said that I was after half a million quid."

"They got back to me the next day and before I knew it I was at Wood Lane doing a screen test."

The Problems With Being A Salon Junior

Dated: November 8, 2007 3:23 PM

Louis-new.gifI’d like to start this week’s post with a question for anyone else starting out in the industry – is it just me or does everyone else find it really hard to find models?

The reason I ask is that I seem to be relying heavily on my contacts book to get people in for my training sessions: this week it was my nan and a friend!

It got me wondering whether it is a universal problem or just me.

I do understand why people would be reluctant to let a trainee loose on their hair – after all it is one of your most important features.

But, it’s not like we are going to do anything dramatically wrong because we are briefed before the cut and we have people watching throughout.

As well as temporarily transforming their premises into a pretty pink wonderland, the five-star salon in Englefield Green invited a charming, bare-chested beau to wait on clients and tend to their every need during their ‘Tickled Pink Tea Party’.

In exchange for a small donation to the charity, clients enjoyed service with a smile and a six-pack from the topless hunk during their treatments at the salon.

Fudge and the Martyn Maxey Salon went underground and urban as the official sponsors of the Kickers Urban Music Awards 2007.

Working closely with celebrity hairdresser Martin Maxey and his team of stylists, the Fudge focused hair team styled the hair of models and celebrity guest presenters throughout the evening.

Being placed next to the stage area to ensure that everyone presenting on stage looked ultra cool before they stepped into the limelight meant they were right on the spot to pick up all the gossip from night.

John Paul DeJoria On The Paul Mitchell Success Story

JOHN-PAUL-DEJORIA.jpg
More than two decades ago John Paul DeJoria joined forces with his friend Paul Mitchell, and launched John Paul Mitchell Systems – the phenomenon which is Paul Mitchell.

In 1989, Paul Mitchell passed away and his son, Angus, soon followed in his father’s footsteps and worked tirelessly to earn the respect of his peers as company co-owner.

The Paul Mitchell story in many ways exemplifies the American dream. It began with just US$700 and is now the largest professional single line privately owned brand in the US.

The rest, as they say, is history, but it’s one of the most interesting and motivating tales of hairdressing history you’ll ever hear.

Have Your Say On Uma Thurman's Hair

Posted by

Dated: November 13, 2007 1:57 PM

Dated: November 13, 2007 1:57 PM

When we asked a couple of stylists whether Uma Thurman had killer hair to match her assassin role in Kill Bill they told us that it's more of a dead loss.

“Uma is such an unusual beauty and always looks stunning. But this colour is too light and solid, with slightly too much gold, which I don’t think suits her fair and pinkish complexion. I would suggest she needs a slightly deeper more multi-tonal colour to complement her features. Her hair colour would be good as a highlight, but it doesn’t work as an all over colour.”
Inanch Emir, Inanch

“Uma is beautiful and elegant but her hair is very fine. I don’t think this long look enhances her delicate features and would suggest a shorter style sitting just above her shoulders. I would add layers to give more volume to the finished look but it would still be feminine and sassy.”
Bruno Marc, Marc Antoni, Reading, Hampshire

But what do you think? If you too feel that she needs work to Be Cool let us know your suggestions for getting the best out of her locks.

It was amazing to see the enthusiasm of the youngsters -- some had only been with the company for a few months - but their talent, skills and comaraderie was exceptional and Charles looked on like a proud father. Ruth@HJi x

Well, that's the conclusion that Metro Readers came up with when polled on celebrities with the most attractive facial features, anyway.

Now, there is a lot to be said for Ms Cruz's long glossy locks, but the best of all celebrities? I'm not convinced.

An ecstatic Olive Tucker from the House of Colour in Dublin was named L'Oréal Talentspotting winner after a tense and exciting Grand Final at the Dorchester Hotel, London.

They then had to fend off questions about their theme, inspiration and presentation from the judging panel of Carolyn Newman from Charles Worthington, Sally Brooks from Brooks and Brooks, Trevor Sorbie and Fellowship president Sean Dawson.

The waiting is over and the finalists of the Clothes Show Live Young Hairdresser of the Year, in association HJi, have been announced.

Over 100 young stylists with between three and five years' experience submitted their ladies commercial looks hoping to win the inagural Young Hairdresser of the Year crown.

After much delibertaion and some tough decisions, the judging panel of Lisa Shepherd, Paul Merritt, Andrew Barton and Beverly C narrowed down the photographs to their 20 favourites.

“This is the sort of competition I love judging above all others, it’s so exciting to see how much young talent is just bursting out of British hairdressing," said Lisa. "Judging was an almost impossible task with such a variety of skills showing through but there were a few that stood out for me.

"Well done to those who made it to the finals, what an amazing achievement. it’s just the start and I can’t wait to see them presenting live on stage at the Clothes Show. Just brilliant.”

The finalists will now have to re-create the looks they submitted in their photograpghs live on stage at the Clothes Show Live on December 9.

The top six on the day will go through to a live catwalk show in front of a packed crowd in the Fashion Theatre, before being narrowed down to one overall winner who will receive a trophy, £1,000 cash, a front cover shoot for HJ and Your Hair magazines and loads more amazing prizes.

George Hammer's new visionary concept

Dated: November 16, 2007 3:37 PM

Dated: November 16, 2007 3:37 PM

I have spent the morning with George Hammer, owner of Urban Retreat at Harrods, talking about his new concept, UR Beautiful, a salon which has opened in Boots in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey.

George isn't a trained hairdresser, but has been in the industry for years. He made his name when he opened The Sanctuary in London, then went on to bring Aveda to the UK before concentrating on his Urban Retreat salon in Harrods.

His passion for business is evident and he is very inspiring to talk to, with fascinating stories and analogies. Urban Retreat at Harrods is the biggest salon in Europe - it occupies 20,000sq ft - but his challenges and concerns can be found anywhere on the high street.

You can read about his new venture early in the new year. Ruth@HJi x

Training on Kids and Mannequins - Louis

Posted by

Posted by Louis Wesolowski
Dated: November 19, 2007 1:43 PM

Dated: November 19, 2007 1:43 PM

Louis-new.gifOn Monday, I had my NVQ training and we were doing our theory work, which was about as much fun as exams can be! We did two H10 tests on blowdrying, setting and the like.

I know I passed one of them, but the other one hasn’t been marked yet and now I won’t find out until the new year because the training stops in December because it is just too busy.

If you do fail a test, there are a number of different options depending on how badly you failed. If you made a complete hash of the paper, you have to do the whole thing again; but if it’s just one or two questions you can go away do your research and then just tackle those – let’s hope I won’t have to do either!

We also did some practice on some mannequins - learning how to pin and set curls. Working on mannequins feels odd at first, but is it useful because you get to have a fiddle and try things out without having to worry about the result!

I actually have two mannequins in my room at home, which my friends find kind of weird. I have to turn them around when I go to sleep, though, because they are scary if you wake up in the middle of the night!

I also cut a little girl’s hair, which was great because I didn’t have to be briefed or watched over until we got to the layering at the end.

Children make great models because they tend to have basic cuts, but the problem is that they fidget loads, which makes the job harder.

The other downside is that kids don’t have blow dries and, as I’ve said before, styling and finishing is my favourite bit of the job, so that’s a bit of a let down. I’m sure I’ll get to do lots of styling mt friends' hair over the party season, though, so I can’t complain.

This week has been full of travel, clients and teaching, long long days and lots of fun!

Well, fun apart from the bit when I was delayed at the airport for hours on end. Thank goodness for my Blackberry because at least I can get some work done.

I do wish airport designers would think about lighting though, those nasty bright lights give you a headache!

Paul Mitchell's 'Truly International' Conference

Paul-Mitchell-Emma-S.jpg

I flew back to London last night after a brilliant couple of days in Rome for Paul Mitchell’s Signature Gathering Europe 2007.

It was the first time this mammoth event, which attracted over 1500 delegates from 21 countries, was held in Europe.

The truly international conference included hair shows by Angus M, Mic salon from Slovenia and the legendry Robert Cromeans.

Technical seminars also gave delegates a chance to brush up on their cutting and colouring skills, with some truly inspiring sessions.

But it wasn’t all work- we all partied into the early hours at the wild 70s party (yes, I was the one in the hideous 70s maxi dress strutting my stuff on the dance floor!).

It was great to meet so many hairdressers from the UK who really did get into the spirit of the whole event in their inspired costumes.

New Shu Uemura Range Unveiled for the Industry

Dated: November 23, 2007 10:11 AM

This week saw the launch of the latest range to hit the professional market, Mr Uemura -- who already has a hugely successful and sought after make-up and skincare range on the high street -- has now designed a haircare specifically for salons.

The premium range includes homecare products as well as relaxing massages which, watching the video at the launch, was relaxing in itself. India Miller from Charlie Miller, Edinburgh, is one of the ambassadors for the range and gave an interesting presentation on the range, revealing that she already has clients who have ordered £200 and £400 worth of products before it has even been launched. Proof that consumers will pay for the best products for their hair. Ruth@HJi x

ghd Host The Night of the Fallen Angels Tour

Dated: November 25, 2007 11:17 AM

Dated: November 25, 2007 11:17 AM

ghd has continued its global expansion programme with a three-city European tour fabulously entitled ‘The Night of the Fallen Angels’.

The two-act extravaganza was staged in Copenhagen, Florence and Madrid and played to a total of 3,000 enthusiastic and enthralled hairdressers.

Act 1 – Creation

The international ghd Directive showcasing 11 ethereal looks on live models around the theme ‘Heavenly Creatures’. These ‘pure and virtuous’ creatures then systematically and shockingly fell from grace in the wickedly sinful and sexy

ghd-Fallen-Angels-Tour-019.jpg

Act 2 – Corruption

High-octane dance numbers and special effects.

ghd-Fallen-Angels-Tour-040.jpg

“The Fallen Angels Tour was an extraordinary undertaking," said Beth Watson, ghd Education Director. "The venues, branding and sheer scale of the event was amazing, but well worth it to produce such an extravaganza.

"We wanted stylists in Denmark, Italy and Spain to have a real ‘brand immersion’ experience and to see some really credible, exciting hairdressing.

"The feedback has been great. We hope this will lead to further UK and European shows next year.”

British Hairdressing Awards 07 in Summary

Posted by

Posted by Kate
Dated: November 27, 2007 8:30 AM

Dated: November 27, 2007 8:30 AM

Missed out on the British Hairdressing Awards? Here's a brief summary of how the biggest night in the hairdressing calendar panned out.

It was at...

At the Grosvenor House Hotel London. The evening began with finalists' drinks, a Schwarzkopf champagne reception and a general drinks reception in the ballroom.

Guests included...

The creme de la creme of British hairdressing. Guests also came from as far afield as Russia and Croatia.

We wore...

Hairdressers don't have a reputation for being some of the most stylish, creative individualistic people for no reason, and those qualities were on full display. Everything went - from full-length and fabulous to high-fashion club wear

We ate...

To start there was pear and radiccio tart, followed by wild, field and forest mushroom soup, then rump of lamb with herbal crust served with daupinoise potatoes, honey roasted carrots and mange tout; but it all paled into insignificance when compared to the melt-in-your-mouth sticky toffee pudding.

Vegetarian guests tucked into a fennel lasagne followed by fresh fruit salad.

We were entertained by...

Host Graham Norton was his usual upbeat quirky self. He entertained guests with his enthusiasm and witty one-liners, and joked that there were two surprises of the evening: that his hairdresser wasn't nominated for any of the awards and that he hadn't slept with any of the winners!

Heather Small also wowed guests with a live performance of her hits, including Moving on Up and One Night in Heaven.

The talking points

Angelo Seminara winning the British Hairdresser of the Year Award - it was the second time he had been nominated; a delighted Errol Douglas celebrating winning the Afro Hairdresser of the Year, 11 years after he first won it.

We danced to...

The latest dance tracks and classic hits and we partied long and hard into the night.

A fantastic night was had by all. Bring on next year...

Brighton hairdresser Mark Woolley and his artistic team were backstage styling hair at a fashion show that raised an impressive £30,000 for the children's charity ChildLine.

The team created simple, but striking looks on celebrities Lisa B, Nancy Sorrell, Ruby Stewart, Poppy Delavigne and Marie Donahue, who joined models on the catwalk at London's Claridge's Hotel.

The Fire and Ice fashion show, featured couture and cutting edge designs from seven top international designers; Sarah Arnett, Jacques Azagury, Christoforos Kotentos, Kyri, Ben de Lisi, Bruce Oldfield and Ruth Tarvydas; as well as spectacular jewels from adler and Autore.

Mark and his team were proud to have been involved in the occasion. He said: "As a family man, I was really keen to show my support to this charity.

"The organisers behind the fashion show were really together and made our life very easy, even with the numerous clothes changes.

"We kept the hair very contemporary and stylish by adding hairpieces donated by Hairaisers to create ultra long, shiny ponytails.

"We swept the hair back, created a quiff at the front and then clipped the Hairaisers hairpieces into place. With the couture dresses modelled, this simple but effective hairdressing worked very well."
