Have you ever known a summer like this? Each morning you look out your curtains hoping for a ray of sunshine to blaze through the window, but each morning there's the same outcome - rain, rain, rain!

Last week I joined a group of journalists for a press event at the brand new Vicki Ullah Wig Boudoir in Harrods, and was stunned by what I learnt.
Vicki quickly laid to rest the misconceptions many of us had held about wigs and hairpieces – that they’re old-fashioned, itchy and unattractive. Instead, one look at the styles on offer at the boutique showed how realistic, chic and easy to use today’s products are.

Hi All! I just wanted to introduce myself as HJi's new web editor, Kate.
I'm a complete newcomer to the HJ team - and the hair industry, but I'm assured that you are a friendly bunch who will make me feel very welcome!
Now that the very fabulous image gallery is up and running (and growing all the time), We're looking forward to bringing you more features, more competitions and more FUN!!!
You'll be seeing plenty of changes on HJi in the coming weeks - and we'll be encouraging you to get involved, tell us what you think and have your say.
Obviously, I'm really keen to add content that you love and want to see. So please do tell me exactly what that is.
That's what I'll be up to in the office; outside of work, I love spending lots of times with people who make me smile - going for nice meals, drinks and doing lots and lots of gossiping.
Like the rest of the HJ team, I have a shopping addiction and I've got a real thing for MAC make-up and high-heeled boots. As for my other passion - and this one might take you by surprise - football, or should I say Arsenal (especially Freddie Ljungberg - was there ever a more perfect man?).
You'll be hearing plenty more from me in the coming weeks - I do like to talk - but please let's make it a two-way process, I'd love to hear from you too...x

The new laws banning smoking in enclosed public places have been greeted with something of a mixed reaction.
The non-smokers' camp are soaking up the luxury of no longer having smokey hair and clothes after a night out; while members of the smokers' camp are struck with the indignity of having to go outside to enjoy a cigarette.

There is nothing more refreshing than going to a salon where every client is treated as a valued guest and the time you spend there allows you to witness superb customer service - in every sense of the word. The Chapel in Tunbridge Wells is a fantastic example of a destination, where hair and beauty work together in harmony.

Anyone who has met Frank Delicompagni of the Francesco Group will know training is something he's passionate about - I certainly was left in no doubt after having the honour of sitting with Frank and some of his team at the recent Business in the Community Awards of Excellence.

There aren't too many things that Madonna gets wrong, and the Queen of Pop was spot on when she sang 'Music makes the people come together'.
A good soundtrack can create a mood, get you all gooey-eyed, and make you feel relaxed in your surroundings. Get the music wrong and you can create tension, spoil a moment and ensure that people never come back.

On Friday night, I caught up with an old friend. Let's call her 'friend' because I don't want to fall out with her...
Anyhow, 'friend' has had her thick wavy locks chopped into something of a POB (mark one, you understand, not the shorter edgier look). At the same time she's gone from dark and glossy to having a full head of caramel-coloured highlights.

Is anyone else as troubled as me by the story in today's papers that says more and more people are embarking on DIY cosmetic surgery?
In case you don't have the time, or the stomach, to read the whole article, there are tales of at-home nose jobs (curiously replacing the cartillage with a chicken bone), tummy tucks (you can only imagine) and pinning back ears with super glue.

Really excited about 'Hairspray' coming out on Friday - nothing like a good musical with a man in drag to make you feel all gooey inside!
But one thing is really troubling me - what are those hair-dos all about?

When HJi approached me about writing a blog, I jumped at the chance - I'm not the kind of person to shun the spotlight!
I'm looking forward to sharing my story of life as a junior; the ups and downs (I'm sure there will be plenty of each) of my training and any other momentous events that occur. Hopefully, some of you will share your tales with me too and we can learn from each other.

I watched Victoria Beckham's Coming to America last night and couldn't take my eyes off her hair. Despite being a little too blonde, Ben Cooke did a great job of the cut, which really softened her features. Even in the middle of a desert, half naked, it still looked good. Victoria called Ben one of her best friends and was obvioulsy very proud of the fact that she had found someone she trusts with her hair and her life. It showed a great hairdresser/client relationship at its best. ruth@HJi x

Over the weekend, I got caught up in a bit of a debate about the merits of long and short hair on women.
My hairdresser (who, incidentally is growing her hair!) says that ladies look sexier with short hair.
She quotes Posh and Kylie as evidence and puts up a pretty strong case.

Last week was one of the hardest of my hairdressing days so far.
Most of my friends are still at college; so they've broken up for the summer holidays. They've got six weeks of chilling out and doing nothing all day ahead of them. I, on the other hand, have to go to work!
I've chatted with a few of them in my lunch break and they're full of 'oh, we went swimming this morning' or 'we're off to the pictures this afternoon' and it is hard not to get a little bit jealous.
The good thing is that I really love what I do and I have to remind myself of that. When I take a step back and think 'yes, but I enjoy it and I am getting a career' it doesn't bother me so much.
