I am trying to get a hair cut for my daughter and am amazed how many salons don't cut children's hair. Alternatively, it costs £40 for a trim. In an image conscious society making sure they have the right clothes and hairstyle is important to many nine year olds. Sleepovers at my house consists of trying out new styles with straighteners, coloured clip in extensions and heated rods accompanied by loud music and lots of giggling. These youngsters are clients of the future and it's important they have happy memories of visiting salons, creating styles and playing with products. Afterall, they could be paying in excess of £50 in a few years time for your service and products. What's your philosophy of dealing with children? Ruth @HJi x

Ruth, I agree, children are the future and salons must look after them if they want to generate a strong loyal client base for the future. In this day and age when salons are facing far greater competition from each other, the switched on hairdressers actively encourage childrens visits, without charging astronomical prices. Whilst understanding the difficulties facing hairdressers sometimes (from a screaming brat), it only takes a few kind words for the child to normally calm down... the first visit is usually the worst, then it becomes an adventure for them. Children need to be considered and looked after in this industry. In the case of young girls, they want to go to the salon to have the experience, to feel grown up, to tell their friends about their hairdresser and salon.. all very good client generating reasons why salons should have a child friendly price structure.

At Eclipse Hair Studio, Stafford, we appreciate the value of the youngsters. Yes, they can be difficult clients - and without explanations here we all know why. Most kids hate having to sit still for as long as it takes and often, the mum is hovering too close nearby making a bit of a nuisance of herself - and not helping the situation.
I was brought up on bribery and corruption - and the salon is no different a stage. At every visit 'my kids' get the choice of a basketful of goodies ... with, of course, their parents consent, The kids love it! They know that if they stay still - and don't fidget too much - they'll get a treat or two. At Hallowe'en they get mini pumpkins full of treats, at Easter they get Cadbury's mini eggs (as do all of my clients, whatever their age) and at Xmas they get their choice of chocolates from the Christmas tree. Of course it's something of 'to catch a thief' but it works in my salon.
