If you have a complaint about something the first thing you do is tell your friends and family -- which no local hairdresser wants. But some people go one step further and write a blog on it. We recieve regular google alerts when there is a story about a hairdresser on the internet and some of the stories regular people are blogging about is atrocious!

They say old habits die hard, and there is one question that I have always wanted an answer too - why do hairdressers prefer to go their local newsagent each Friday and pick up their copy of HJ, rather than have it delivered to their own door....?
Is it habit, tradition or just because you enjoy the familiarity of going to the newsagent? Or is it that you also pick up magazine's for the salon's reception area?
Would be great to hear from you.

Fellowship for British Hairdressing Fashion Focus

I've just travelled back from Manchester where I co-presented the Fellowship for British Hairdressing's Fashion Focus.
The show was all about looks for spring/summer and was split into seven categories, which included long, men and floral. With three teams in each category it was amazing to see how different people interpret different trends. You would think 'floral' would mean the same to everyone but Mark Leeson, Royston Blythe and Hooker & Young all put their own individual mark on the trend. Shows such as these and Salon International are a fantastic way to see the latest trends and techniques to take back to the salon. Getting inspiration and sharing ideas with your peers and fellow hairdressers is what the industry is all about. See our full report on the night in 6 April issue of HJ. Ruthx

The work on the HJi Image Gallery is continuing at an amazing pace and I am continually in awe of the team that we have building this amazing environment - they speak in a completely different language.......but understand the vision we are trying to achieve.
But then so do many of the youngsters I encounter on a daily basis - whether it be via text messages or on MySpace.

Judging Live Hair Show a Challenge

Yesterday I had my first experience of judging a live hair show - and what an experience it was. Redken asked me to judge the Birmingham regional final of its Urban Rap Talent Show at the NEC. The competition was split into two categories - Urban Talent Style Innovator and Urban Talent Color Genius.

Protecting the environment

I spent last weekend in Milan with Aveda at its annual Masterjam event, watching what some of the company's top name hairdressers are predicting for the year ahead. I was also given an insight into the company's philosophy on the environment, as it launches its Earth Month, with the terrifying statistic that a child dies every 15 seconds through lack of clean water. As we take water, food and clean air for granted in the Western World, someone somewhere is suffering because of our selfish actions. I give to charity WaterAid and teach my children the importance of looking after their environment -- turning taps off, recycling and swtiching lights off -- and if everyone did something small every day we could help solve the problem. In fact, we are currently putting together a HJ Business section that is totally devoted to going green. If we all take action now we can make a difference. ruthx
