Each year, we strive to make the British Hairdressing Awards bigger and better than ever before, in every way and by looking at every aspect. If you have any ideas about the event, or the night itself, then please comment on this posting.

I can't believe we only have one issue left of 2006 -- where has the year gone! It's certainly true that time flies when you are having fun and this year has been bursting with events, awards and launches. This has been my 11th year on HJ and has been one of the most exciting years yet. I'm receiving more and more inspiring fashion collections, the market is flooded with innovative products and there are so many social events it sometimes feels like one long party. To top it off, the new style HJ is looking fabulous and we are working on exciting projects to inspire you guys even more in 2007. ruthx

As Christmas approaches and some seem to be winding down, work here continues at a pace on HJi. With a design agency appointed to ensure the site is everything you want - and more, and thousands of images being scanned for the searchable Image Gallery, it really is an exciting time.
Next week we will be adding business information to the site - so let me know what you want to see, and how you want to see it.

I started my Christmas shopping yesterday and there is only one word to describe it -- exhausting! As I rushed from shop to shop trying to find the must-have gifts for kids and hubby, I longed for an hour of pampering and relaxation. And even better, I could have done my shopping at the same time. This is the perfect time of year for salons to be retailing gift sets and ensuring clients can buy their favourite products . If someone had approached me yesterday while enjoying a Starbucks and tried to sell me a bag of coffee I would probably have bought it for someone. The same is in the salon -- while clients are relaxed you can take some of the stress out of Christmas shopping and retail beautiful gift box sets -- receiving your favourite shampoo with a candle or bottle of wine is a great stocking filler. If you don't offer this you are missing out -- so what are you waiting for! ruthx

It has certainly been a busy week here at HJ that started with the Fellowship for British Hairdressing's annual lunch. Akin Konizi of HOB, and a British Hairdresser of the Year nominee this year, was named Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year and Richard Ward, Gold Star Hair Ambassador of the Year.
Salons also seem busy as the days tick away until Christmas, so I am not quite sure when we are all going to get that Christmas shopping done!

My first month as acting features editor of HJ is nearly over - and it's flown by. I've joined at an exciting time. I'd only been in my new role for a week when I was mingling with the top movers and shakers of the industry at the British Hairdressing Awards.
Now, after 20 years as a journalist, I've attended my fair share of industry awards ceromonies and they were never like this! For a start, there were so many good looking people - with a sense of style. Also, the people receiving the awards were obviously overjoyed. Even for a jaded hack like me, it was a moving experinece to see British Hairdresser of the Year Andrew Barton drop to his knees in ecstasy after being presented with his trophy.

I can't believe that is it -- we have finished work on the 2006 issues! Today's issue is our final one for the year and most of us have finished work in the office today. And what a year it has been! The new look HJ has gone from strength to strength and the hairdressing calendar has been rammed with launches, events and social gatherings. I'm not back until the 4 January so I'd just like to wish everyone a great Christmas and hope Santa makes your wishes come true! ruthx

OK, so how many other people are not ready for Christmas? This is the time of year when I find working and having a family the most difficult to manage as expectations at home escalate, the pressure mounts on having the right presents for everyone, Christmas dinner for 11 has to be bought (yet alone cooked!) and I could carry on.
Work continues at a pace too, so the 24 hours in each day are just not enough! Writing Christmas cards takes forever, helping small people write theirs takes even longer (but is secretly great fun), and then there is only the brave who tackle the shops these days and decide to shop, rather than use the internet! Wish me luck...... Jayne x

Today is my last day in the office until the New Year, and I have to say that I am really looking forward to spending some time with my boys and being a Mummy. Quality 'at home' time for me is really special as it is for everyone........so I am looking forward to making the most of it.
That said, all the things we have planned for next year are really exciting, so I can hardly wait to start on that too........
Will keep blogging from home - would be great to hear how everyone else is trying to manage all the things that need doing.

Nearly Christmas and although I'm ready for a break - if you can call cooking dinner for five guests a break - I'll miss the buzz of the industry, which has dominated the last few weeks of my life.
I'd like to say a big thanks to everyone I've met so far for making me feel so welcome and wish all HJ readers a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
See you all in January!

Hello! Having spent the day getting my colour done (and thanks to Robbie my blonde is welcoming the addition of a deep berry colour)and Christmas shopping, I am trying this to see if I can blog from my Blackberry!
If I can do this, you will be able to comment via your handheld devices too.......and as we progress the build of HJi, upload your own information.
Fingers crossed this works.

At last, all the Christmas presents are bought (and wrapped!!) and the food is all in the fridge. Seeing Christmas through the eyes of two small children is the only way to see it as it is all just too exciting.
Great too to see that every salon I have passed has been packed out - which is great for business.
Hope you are all nearly ready too.

Well, how did it go? I did manage to get all the Christmas presents needed, and dinner on the table for 11 people! Wonders never cease.
Hope everyone had a great Christmas and that Santa brought them everything they wanted and desired........ As some people start the return to work, I am really grateful to have another week off with my boys........ Finding it hard not to think about all the things that need doing in 2007 though.
Round at my brother's now though and just about to start playing games....

So with just hours of 2006 left, this is always the time to reflect on achievements - both personal and professional. It was a busy year at HJ and as we continue to develop the magazine, this has been happening alongside a strategy to see the launch and implementation of HJi.
2007 will see the site develop massively, but not to the detriment of the magazine. Plans for new events to help you improve your business are also well underway, and with loads of info on the HJi Business Blog....

At 9.15pm on New Year's Eve, I would guess that the majority of the hairdressing industry are out partying - and looking forward to welcoming the 2007 in just a few hours time.
This time of year, more than any other, is one when you reflect on what has happened, what you have achieved and, on a personal note, think about the loved ones that you miss and those that you are fortunate enough still to have around - well I do.
For 2007, I want to continue to live life to the full and ensure that I enjoy every minute!
Happy New Year.

Hi everyone, I'm Alice and I'm the new writer working across the website and the main magazine.
I am so honoured to be working at Hairdressers Journal which I can't believe has been going for more than 125 years. I love the image gallery on HJi which is a real testament to the hairstyles that time forgot and an inspiration for new trends.
My first ever job was as a Saturday girl in a local salon, I thought I was rich earning £12 a day! My last job was in the fashion section of a consumer magazine and starting at HJ feels a bit like I've gone full-circle.
I'm a sucker for old-fashioned glamour and I love looking out for one-off vintage buys. I also get inspiration from old movies and could quite happily watch them all day whilst drinking endless cups of tea. A few of my favourite style icons are Catherine Deneuve, Penelope Tree and Jean Seberg.
I'm a big music fan and I've been going to festivals and gigs for years. I love the way that music inspires trends, you often see styles worn by bands long before they make it to the catwalk.
I'll be busy on the forum so I'd love to hear from you all. Tell me about your hair horror stories, celebrity style icons, business woes and salon gossip!
