A blog is a frequently-updated website made up mainly of short entries. The most recent entries appear at the top of the page, and the older ones further down.
At the bottom of each post you'll see the name of the journalist who made the post, the date and time they posted it, as well as the Categories it appeared in. More on Categories in a moment.
A blog isn't just a place for you to read what we've written - you can join in the discussion, too. Every post on the blog has the option for you to leave a
comment on it, giving your own opinion on the subject. Just click on the Comments link at the bottom of an entry to do so.
Some entries have a Read More link at the bottom. That means
that the post was too long for the front page of the blog. If you click on Read More, you'll be taken through to the rest of the entry.
Entries are broken down into Categories, which are broad topics. You can click on the Category link on the right hand column to see a page with all entries on that Category.
Tags, on the other hand, are a list of things mentioned in the article. These can be companies, people or even just ideas. You can click on any tag to see a list of all entries on this blog that have the same tag.
Trackbacks are links to other blogs, elsewhere on the Internet, which have written about that particular blog post. Click on the links to read those comments.

Have you tuned in to Celebrity Scissorhands on BBC3? I watched the first episode from behind a cushion, waiting for the weird and wonderful celebrities to destroy our great industry. But with Lee Stafford as salon manager and Essensual's Stephen Glendinning and Ben Cooke from Lockonego guiding them, it showed what a difficult job cutting hair actually is.
Apart from the freaky clients with dreadlocks and messy hair, Lee has stressed the importance of good consultations, making the client feel special and being professional at all times. It can be cringe-worthy at times, and it has shown what a difficult job hairdressing is but when done well, the smile on a clients face says it all.

Here at HJ we are working on the final issues of the year and we can hardly believe where the time has gone. I don't know if working on a weekly magazine makes time go faster, or if it's simply because I'm getting older that the weeks are flying past!
I for one am getting very excited about the arrival of my first child which is due in 5 weeks. I'm at work for the next couple of weeks, and then I have a wonderful journalist by the name of Matthew Batham covering for me for six months while I get to grips with this mummy thing! Having spent the last six years living and breathing hairdressing working on a fantastic magazine, I'm not sure how I will cope with the totally different pressures of motherhood. Any tips would be much appreciated!
Anyway today I am working on a celebrity style feature for one of our December issues, I thought I would focus on Lily Allen, she's so cool right now and has the most fantastic hair. Best get to work! Emma

I have just come back from a Hair & Beauty Benevolent meeting, and it never ceases to amaze me how much time and effort some people are prepared to put in to helping those in need. That said, there are plenty more out there who could help - just a little bit - to ensure that HABB can help those who need it the most.
How about coming to the HABB Ball at the London Hilton Hotel on Monday, 5th February? You can mingle with celebrities and your hairdressing idols - all whilst raising money for a great cause. Please call 01372 849639 to book your tickets and find out how you can help.

The Sensuality Ball 07
If you couldn’t support yourself or your children through no fault of your own – where would you turn?
If an accident prevented you from working again, who would look after you?
If a debilitating illness meant that you – or a loved one – needed assistance would anyone be prepared to help you?
If you ask the Hair & Beauty Benevolent, the answer to all of these is yes – but we need your support.
Teams appearing include Lisa Shepherd, Errol Douglas, HOB Salons, Richard Ward, Vidal Sassoon, Hooker & Young, Mahogany, Andrew Barton and the Saks Art Team.

Being a not entirely natural blonde, any helping hand to make my colour look more vibrant is always a good thing. I've recently had lots of colour pigment shampoos and conditioners land on my desk, and I am really impressed at how fabulous they are. If you haven't already tried them, there's loads around and I really think they make a difference. I use a platinum blonde 'purple' conditioner a couple of times a week and it gives my colour just enough lift to make it look fresh again. This really is a golden retail opportunity for salons.
Anyway, don't miss this week's HJ where you can exclusively preview images of the finalists for the British Hairdressing Awards specialist categories- there's some great work and I really wouldn't like to have been a judge.

At 6am this morning I left London for Rome with the Toni & Guy artistic team to the Italian launch of label.m.
After a day of hard prepping for the team (and a long lunch of fresh pasta!!) for Nicola, Christian and I, the models are now ready for an amazing show tomorrow, which will be watched by 800 enthusiastic Italian hairdressers!
Now it's time to go and sample some local culture and get to know the art team better..........

For those of you who think it is glamorous being part of an artistic team - it is. But it also requires hair word and dedication as the hours are long, the pressure high and the workload intense.
As the team in Rome continue their preparations for this afternoon's show, there are other Toni & Guy art teams working in Germany and Japan.
This afternoon will see the new Expressionism collection, avant garde looks and editorial work from London Fashion Week demonstrated as part of this label.m show.

Our blog is not just a place for journalists to write about the industry, it is also a place where you can comment on what they've written about. Comments are open on every single post we make, and we would love to hear your thoughts on the topics under discussion.
If you click on the Comments link on the bottom of every blog post, you have the option of leaving a comment there and then. Just put in your name and e-mail address, and your comment, and click publish. The comment might take a short while to appear, but shortly it will appear on the website.
If you have your own website or blog, please put its address in the URL box. and your name under your comment will appear as a link to your own website.
If you think you might be leaving comments regularly, it might be worth registering with Typekey, an independent commenting service which is not affiliated with HJi or its publisher, Reed Business Information. A Typekey identity will allow you to post comments more quickly, and makes it more likely that they will be published straight away. Your Typekey account can also be used on many other blogs all over the web.

I've just spent the weekend in Milan, at the International final of the 2006 Wella Professionals Trend Vision Award, two days of inspiration and patriotism, as more than 50 countries battled it out for the ultimate prize; being crowned International winner. A Parade of Nations saw flag waving and cheering as competitors took to the stage, before an evening of entertainment which saw waterfalls, acrobatics and a classical orchestra. Victoria Nebbett from Monroe Hairdressing did a great job representing the UK, but lost out to Portugal, who took first place. It was great to see all the countries supported by their own contingencies, but also the respect for the winner from the whole world. I've written a report with some great pictures for 8 December issue. ruthx

In a world where imperial is old hat and metric measures are the way to go, hairdressing seems to be the one industry that has passed it by. While the rest of the UK refer to cm and metres, hair is still seen in inches and salon interiors in sq ft. Or is it? We write regular step by steps and refer to cm sections rather than inches and interiors in sq m rather than sq ft. But does this mean anything to you -- let us know which one you prefer. Afterall, we write the magazine to educate and inspire you, so let us know. ruthx

We've just received Friday's issue in the office and the tension is mounting. There is an exclusive sneak preview of the images by the 2006 British Hairdresser of the Year nominees and the standard is amazing. Antoinette Beenders, Andrew Barton, Angelo Seminara, Akin Konizi, Richard Ward and Errol Douglas have pushed the boundaries to create collections that are inspiring, aspiring and breath-taking. They only have five days to go until they find out who will be crowned the best of British and I for one can't wait. Hope to see some of you there -- we'll be photographing the best dressed so come and find us. ruthx

If the waiting is nearly killing me, it must be intolerable for the finalists and nominees! The British Hairdressing Awards will take place on Monday at the London's Grosvenor House Hotel - and it truly is the biggest night in British hairdressing.
Sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, emotions are running high and the nerves are really starting to kick in but more than anything, this demonstrates the passion, creativity and commitment that the true professionals in this industry have for their craft.

Wow, what a week! It's been party, party, party and I for one am exhausted! Sunday saw the Black Hair/Wahl Awards, with Marlon Wright from M&M Hair Academy taking the Afro Stylist of the Year award, and Monday was the biggest night in hairdressing, the British Hairdressing Awards. About 2,000 hairdressers descended on the Grosvenor House hotel in London with their gladrags on to find out who would be named as best in British. And they weren't disappointed. The 16 regional and specialist award winners all created outstanding collections that were inspiring and awe-inspiring, letting the world know that British hairdressing is without doubt, the best in the world. It was a great night and my feet have only just stopped throbbing! See all the pictures and news in next week's issue. ruthx
