Hi guys.
I've been the features editor on HJ for about six years now and I have to say the novelty of working in this fantastic industry has most definitely not worn off! Life on a weekly magazine is constantly manic, and my diary is filled with meetings, interviews, salon openings, product launches, hair and fashion shows, conferences, and pretty much anything that crops up in the industry.
I’m expecting my first baby on 13 December 2006 so right now I have big fashion envy and can’t stand the fact that I can’t fit into this seasons hottest looks, still, it’s a small price to pay for the wonderful prospect of being a mummy.
Right now I am loving Lilly Allen, DKNY Be Delicious perfume, Spooks on a Monday night and chocolate raisins. I’m delighted bobs are back in a big way, they’re so easy to wear and can be personalised to suit anyone.
I’ll be blogging away on our fab new website, so please keep in touch and let me know what you think.

Hi guys,
I'm Matthew, News Editor on HJ.
My main responsibilities with HJ include compiling the news pages and the Community Page, which keeps readers up-to-date with what's going on at My HJi, and writing many of the business features.
I also update the news on HJi and try and spend as much time as possible on the forums.
I look forward to meeting you there!

After a tough few weeks of late nights, early mornings, stress and tears at HJ HQ we've finally produced our biggest issue ever and I have to say, I'm just a little bit proud! As well as all your regulars such as news, fashion and business, we've thrown in some celebrities and cutting edge catwalk fashion for good measure and, of course, a good read.
I loved putting together the London Fashion Week report - what girl wouldn't enjoy getting a sneaky peak at next season's hottest trends? I'm putting together my summer shopping list already! And let's not forget the hair...the long, luscious looks were simply gorgeous and ballerina buns - what a fabulous fix for a quick and elegant style.
What do you think will be hot next summer?

Two days and counting. Yes this is my thought most Thursday’s when the weekend beckons and there is fabulous fun to be had - and this one is no exception. However instead of spending it with a few fantastic friends in darkened bars, there will be more than 32,000 thousand of us, in well, an exhibition hall and then some darkened bars. Which is nice. This is my second Salon International – but I can already confirm I will wish for the following throughout the three-day event:
- The ability to say no to one for the road
- The ability to recognise sleep as a necessity
- The ability to recognise flat shoes as an necessity
Although it’s unlikely the magical genie will grant my wishes, the genius lies in the fact that the weekend will be magical. I can’t wait to see you there.

It's the biggest weekend of the year and I can't wait. I've got my flat shoes at the ready and pen and paper in my hand. It's Salon International and it's going to be great.
It's a perfect end to a perfect week. This week's issue is our biggest ever and we've all got a few more grey hairs and wrinkles, but it was worth it. Personally, I am very proud of it as it has some of our best features and amazing fashion collections all in one issue. And it's all exclusive!! If you see me dashing around the hall do come and say hello, it's always nice to catch up with you guys.
See you there!

I'm the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of HJ, which basically means I oversee the entire content of HJ but am also responsible for the advertising and financial side of the business which includes Salon International, the British Hairdressing Awards, the British Hairdressing Business Awards, the great supplement programme that HJ brings to you each year and now, of course, HJi.

Hi guys I’m Ruth and I’ve worked on HJ for almost 11 years.
My life is a whirl of fashion, frocks and fractions, as I juggle hair lengths at work and skirt lengths at home with my eight year old daughter. My hair may be fiery but I’m passionate in all the right areas – chocolate, champagne, fashion and family. You’ll never catch me not wearing jewellery – the bigger and blingier the better. I have a different ring for every day of the month and once owned more than 300 pairs of earrings. My biggest achievement in hairdressing is sending my daughter to school with ponytail plaits and cutting a graduated bob in three hours. I’m fanatical about Reality TV, celebrities, jewellery and music. The devil may wear Prada but this one wears Primark! I’ve watched a vlog, I’ve never owned clogs, I’d love a dog but this is the first time I’ve blogged! Ruth x

I can hardly believe Salon International is this weekend. Is it me or has the last 12 months gone extremly fast? I'm really looking forward to seeing the latest products and trends and can't wait to catch up with some old friends.
Check out this week's issue of HJ that you'll see at Salon, it's amazing! I personally am so proud of this issue - it's our biggest issue EVER and just shows what a great team we have here at HJ. It was very hard work to produce, but definitely worth it.
Let me know what you think and don't forget to say "hi" if you see me at Salon.

Salon International opens its doors in 24 hours and it is great to see the excitement building. Offering everything that a stylist, colour technician, assistant, salon owner or manager could ever need - this event inspires business.
We are all really excited about seeing everyone in the next three days - so please come and say hello - and remember, flat shoes are the best option! Shame none of the HJ team will heed that warning!
For tickets call 0870 272 2000 - lines close this evening and tickets can be collected and/or purchased at the event itself.

Jayne is absolutely right that flat shoes are the way forward, but when she says the HJ team will no doubt ignore this, lets hope that the boys stick to their flats!
Anyway, I won't be arriving at Salon International until late tomorrow afternoon as I'm judging for Wella's Trend Vision UK final on Saturday. I'm really looking forward to seeing the wild and wonderful creations and will let you know my thoughts over the weekend.
If, like me, you are packing tonight, good luck, it's always a chore deciding what to bring- but it's much less painful with a glass of chilled wine to help you through it! (If I end up looking like multi-coloured swap shop this weekend, you know I didn't stop at one glass!)
See you there.

Having arrived at ExCeL just two hours ago, the Hair Show is looking fantastic. The final touches are being put to stands and stages that are literally going to 'rock' from Saturday to Monday - bringing hairdressers inspiration, education and entertainment in abundance.
You really have to be here...............so get your tickets now and enjoy the best hairdressing show in the world.

It is now 10pm and the doors are ready to open at 9.30am in the morning. There are some fantastic looking stands, with equally enormous stages - and an amazing line up of the best names in British hairdressing.
If you do nothing more than come to the Hair Show, then you are in for a treat as this weekend promises to be the best Salon International ever.
See you tomorrow.

Next time a customer walks into the salon, ask yourself, what is it that you actually do for them? Sounds obvious- colour, treatments, styling, etc- but take a step back and think about it.
Harley Davidson sell motorbikes, right? Well yes, but listen to their marketing director:
"What we ACTUALLY sell is the ability for a 43-year-old accountant to dress in black leather, ride through small towns and have people be afraid of him!"
In other words, its what's behind the product/service- the real customer experience- that counts. So what do you really sell?

Ok so I've been at the show now for five hours and I have to say it is the best Salon International I have ever been to and this is my tenth.
I have seen shows by some of the best hairdressers in the UK -- Paul Falltrick and Pat Wood on the BaByliss stand, hob Salons on the Wella stage, Mark Woolley on the Fellowship stage and Rae Palmer and Michael Barnes on the HJ Stage. I have just come out of the Fallen Angels show on the ghd stand and it was amazing. It was pure theatre -- a cross between Cirque de Soleil and Rocky Horror Show. Whatever you do beg, borrow or blag a ticket but beware, it's hot -- and it's not just the lighting that is giving off heat!
I'm now going to look round the British Hairdressing Awards Gallery on the Schwarzkopf stand -- see you there!

What a fantastic start to a fabulous Salon International.

I have just left Tim Hartley's Live Show, which was wonderful. He has such a natural way of engaging the audience in what he is doing, and proved that he has made his own mark in the short time since he has left Vidal Sassoon.
In fact the man himself was a surprise guest in the audience, and came on stage to show his support for Tim, calling him "one of the greatest of all time."
Tim created some amazing looks, from strong, cabaret-inspired 20s bobs; to Comme de Garcon inspired looks with some simple, classical cuts that proved he's back where he belongs.

In the seven hours since Salon International opened, the quality - and sheer quantity - of work being produced in the Hair Show is simply spectacular.
This event is an absolute must for anyone who wants to further their career in hairdressing - no matter what stage of your career you are at. There is absolutely everything here that you could ever need - so what are you waiting for?

Salon International is about much more than just the exhibition floor, the shows, the seminars...... it is a microcosm of the industry- reflecting the huge and wonderous melting pot that is hairdressing. Take this chance encounter between one of the Salon team, and an anonymous individual, at 8.30 AM this morning in the Novatel hotel:

I have just been to see Richard and Hellen Ward's business seminar on how to raise your profile through PR and marketing. Hosted by our very own features editor Emma Summersby it was a fantastic insight into their business, and how they have raised their own profile throughout the years to become renowned within the industry for their business acumen and commercial success. The seminar was informal, and informative and they have a great way of interacting with the audience, making their success seem accessible to everyone if you have true passion and a belief in your brand and your business.

I have just come out of the live show by Antoinette Beenders and there is only one thing to say -- wow! She proved once again why she is the queen of hairdressing, with her fabulous 90 minute presentaion. Talking about what she finds inspirational, she spoke about how the world is changing and with it, fashion and style. With her unique eye, she used war, peace and the classics as ways of turning hairstyles into works of art. Sponsored by Avedawww.aveda.co.uk the audience got the chance to see hair in another dimension. Antoinette is truly a modern day hairdressing legend and I felt privileged to see her in action. ruthx

It may be hot in the Hair Hall but Salon International is seriously cool - it's official. According to bible of cool - CoolBrands - An insight into some of Britain's coolest brands, Fudge, Dermalogica, ghd and Toni & Guy are officially cool brands and they're all here at Salon. Check out the Fudge and Dermalogica stands, watch the ghd Night of the Fallen Angels show and grab a ticket for a Toni & Guy seminar (which are taking place today at 3pm and on Monday at 1pm) then you might be cool enough for a mention in the next book!

It feels as if the entire hairdressing industry is here - and what a treat they are getting. With hairdressing heroes working on the many live stages throughout the Hair Show - visitors are getting the best education available anywhere in the world.
Simply stunning - the Live shows have demonstrated what raw talent we have in this industry, the Seminars have shown how good education can be, and throughout the show - you have the best array of hairdressing products, tools and equipment - all for the professional.
This is inspiring business.

There are quite possibly more UK hairdressers in one place than ever before- and its here at Excel. Over 50,000 tickets have now been sold for Salon- and this could mean as many as 1 in 4 of all UK hairdressers are here- an incredibly high figure, and unmatched in other business exhibitions

A packed audience in the Salon Live theatre was testament to the international allure of the Vidal Sassoon artistic team, and it was wonderful to see them create styles from their latest collection - Metropolis - live on stage. Mark Hayes created some stunning looks on his models, saying he was proud to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors. Next stop: Mahogany Live seminar so watch this space.

After an amazing three days at Salon International the HJ team are all back at HQ writing up all our show reports, which you will be published in HJ 3 November issue. To say we are exhausted is an understatement, but we are equally as motivated and inspired by the king sized portions of fantastic hairdressing we've all seen. It was lovely to see so many friendly faces at the show, especially those who had travelled from overseas.
Anyway, I'd better get back to writing up the shows- unfortunately our deadlines don't stop when we're all exhausted! Roll on Saturday so we can all have a well-deserved rest!

We have hardly had time to take a breath since returning from Salon International and we have been literally inundated with pictures and show reports which are being collated for the 3rd November issue of Hairdressers Journal International.
If you didn't make the show, then check out this issue and enjoy all that could be seen at this fabulous showcase for British hairdressing. The dates for next year are 13th - 15th October 2007 so put them in your diary now.
As for the HJ team, the majority are still wearing flat shoes.......

The British Hairdressing Awards Gallery at Salon International showcased the work of all the finalists and nominees for the first time this year. Literally jammed with people throughout the weekend - the work displayed highlights why British hairdressing is the best in the world.
On the 27th November 2007, the winners will be announced at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London - and I, for one, can hardly wait!

Phew! I don't know about you but my feet are only just recovering from last weekend. Almost 48,000 hairdressers descended on ExCeL London, for Salon International and I for one feel like I spoke to most of them!! As everyone else went back to their businesses, life in the HJ office has been non-stop, as we have put together a comprehensive review of everything that was great about the show. With thousands of images to look through, we have chosen highlights from all the live shows, seminars, presentations in the Hair Hall and news and views for the 3 November issue. If you were there you can relive the inspiration and if you weren't there then see what you missed. This weekend I'm spending with my children -- although hairdressing will still be a feature as my daughter tries out her brand new straighteners direct from Salon! Have a good one ruthx

Well what a week it has been? Here at HJ we are all just about ready to drop, after a sensational few days at Salon International. We're working on November issues now and today I've been writing a feature on Craig Cotes from Big Brother 6, and his new salon in Norwich. Don't miss the feature in 10 November HJ.
I'm not quite sure where this year has gone, I am sure time goes quicker when you have weekly schedules, or maybe I am just getting older?! Anyway, believe it or not I have finished, yes finished, my Christmas shopping! With a baby on the way in just 7 weeks, I thought I'd better get organised and get all my Christmas shopping done early. I'm not sure if that makes me extremely sad or simply very organised!!
Anyway roll on Saturday morning when the HJ team can finally catch up on some much needed rest!

As all the copy for the Salon International review has now been sent to press, all of us here are breathing a little more easily as it is a huge task, looking through thousands of pictures, captioning them all and making sure that everyone gets a mention.
For me, a couple of days in Edinburgh with my little men was a great treat, and just reminded me of how difficult it is to find that work/life balance when you want to give 150% to your job and being a Mummy!
Anyway, have a fab weekend.

We've just passed the pages for next week's issue and have relived Salon International all over again. When you are working so hard you don't always notice everything that goes on around you and it isn't until afterwards that you reflect and realise what you have been part of. Reading the reports and looking through thousands of images from the whole of the show has brought the adrenaline rush, buzz and excitement flowing back. I hope you enjoy our report and we look forward to seeing you there next year! ruthx

Morning! Now I know that most hairdressers are busy on a Saturday morning but you must have something you want to comment on - whether it is related to this new website, the industry in general - or maybe something you have done that you want to share - why not post a comment on this blog! All you had to do is click on comment and it is as easy as sending an email.
Now I don't know many hairdressers who are shy, or who don't want to share their ideas and experiences with others............so go on, what are you waiting for?

As work on HJi continues at a pace, I am amazed at how much we will be able to offer you and how easily accessible we can make it. But how do you want to search picture archives? By colour, style, length, hairdresser - or a mixture of all of these?
Now is the time to comment here so that I, and the development team, can ensure we give you what you want - how you want it. So please, take just five minutes and tell us what you want to see........and it doesn't have to be just images!

I have just had my hair cut by 2006 British Hairdresser of the Year nominee Akin Konizi at his Baker Street HOB Salon. Having naturally curly hair can be a challenge but after a consultation I felt safe in the knowledge that I was in expert hands. Talking with Akin about his clients, his passion for hair and his enthusiasm, it dawned on me that being a good hairdresser is all about the cut. Being a great hairdresser is about exceeding the client's expectations, being someone who listens, an architect of hair, a psychologist and an educator all rolled into one.
