Red carpet hair trends at the 2013 oscars: old hollywood waves

Classic Hollywood waves, worn slung over one shoulder for an asymmetric finish, have been the undisputed hairstyle hit of award season - and the 2013 Oscars was no different with stars of all ages opting for perfectly formed waves.

Jessica Chastain may not have picked up any awards last night, but she wins my prize for best hair colour on the red carpet. Her auburn shade is pristine and works perfectly with her nude dress and vampish lip shade.

And, proving it's a style that works at all ages, Helen Hunt makes a similar style work perfectly too - although it could be a tiny bit smoother through the top.

Top TV hairdresser, Jamie Stevens, says: "The likes of Helen Hunt, Reese Witherspoon and Naomie Harris all played with old school glamour but Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain epitomised this look for me, with on-trend coppery auburn locks that tumbled loosely over her shoulders and complemented her flesh coloured gown and cool skin tone to perfection. Keeping it straighter on the top area of the head brings this 40's inspired look up to date."

And proving it's not just about blonde bombshells and ravishing redheads, Naomie Harris and Catherine Zeta Jones brought a dark and smouldering update to the style - the perfect shade for showing off impossible shine.

But did everyone nail the trend? Celebrity hairdresser, Richard Ward, thinks not. ""For me, Catherine Zeta Jones' waves are a bit 'old hat'," he says. "They're far too structured and there's no movement or softness to the ends which give the overall style a very rigid feel. It looks too far too overdone; I think she needs to take note of the younger stars who's styles look more 'undone' and had a natural quality to it."
