Hair trends at the 19th annual screen actors guild awards: updos Kelly-Osbourne-Kerry-Washington-hair-sag-awards-2013.jpgNothing says red carpet glamour quite like an updo and while ponytails and buns are part of our everyday styling wardrobe these days, an intricate bespoke hair up style is still a special occasion treat.

At the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, we saw everything from sky-high quiffs to elegant sweeping styles - providing a host of inspiration for every hairdresser and their clients.

We asked Warren Holmes, international creative director at Nicky Clarke, for his verdict.

Kelly Osbourne

"Kelly's victory roll is perfectly executed for her and her look. It is demure but not too 'done' which creates a youthful and relax feel but with directional style."

Kerry Washington

"Kerry's half-up 'do is another twist on the victory roll, a bit like Kelly's style. This look is less directional and more sophisticated and, when paired with the waves, is a great grown-up take on the trend."

"This faux bob is another look we'll be seeing more of and Michelle carries it off well. It lifts the face and shows of the neck and shoulder, which can be very alluring."

Claire Danes

"Claire has a quirkiness about her style and this faux bob works brilliantly for here. The key is the hair over the right ear which creates an interesting shape and disguises the ears. It is fuss free, cool, with a nod to the 1990s and good use of root colour."

"This quiff is not clinical enough for me and is an example of when backcombing isn't thorough enough. The gaps in between backcombing sections can create cause distraction once styled and this is what I think has happened here."
