Is Your Salon Blogging?

You may think your website is enough to give you a good online presence, but if you’re not blogging you could be missing out on an additional opportunity to drive traffic to your site and customers through your salon door.

A blog is effectively an online journal and, as the entries are easy to post, they allow you to frequently update your website. However, according to web host, Fasthost, only 3% of small and medium-sized businesses are planning to start a blog on their website.

If you’re not blogging then you are lagging behind in the technology stakes. Blog tracker Technorati says there are nearly 54 million blogs in existence with 75,000 created daily.

Expert Advice from National Hairdressers' Federation

Ray Seymour, general secretary of the National Hairdressers' Federation answers your questions

"How can I employ apprentices under the age discrimination legislation as I believe it is illegal to ask a person’s age? I can’t afford to pay the National Minimum Wage (NMW) and meet the training costs."

From 1 October the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 prohibit unjustified direct and indirect age discrimination, and all harassment and victimisation on grounds of age, whether against the young or old. Effectively it:

  • bans any discriminatory procedures in recruitment on the grounds of age, at any age, not only older workers

  • outlaws age-related harassment in the workplace on the lines of current gender equality legislation

  • outlaws workplace benefits that are age-related (which could be bad news for some older workers)

  • sets a default retirement age of 65, thereby outlawing arbitrary earlier retirement ages. This does not prevent a person electing to retire early.

While you may not select your employees on the grounds of age there is no restriction on where or how you advertise the vacancy.

This means you could advertise in the media that school leavers would read and that might attract young applicants.

However, if another reader saw the advert and applied for the job then you would have to consider them for the position using non-discriminatory criteria.

If you select future apprentices by way of an age criteria, for example, they must not be older than 18, then this would be discriminatory and actionable through the Employment Tribunal.

Should the claimant establish a provisional prima facie case, then the onus is on you to prove your innocence. Should the complaint be sustained there is no limit on the amount that may be awarded to the claimant by the Employment Tribunal.

There are exemptions from the NMW for apprentices, and those deemed to be apprentices because they are on certain government-funded training programmes.

The exemption covers all apprentices under 18, until their 19th birthday or, for older apprentices, the first year of their employment. Once the exemption has expired the NMW must be paid. Under current regulations there is nothing to stop you having a 60-year-old apprentice.

Many businesses are conducted through partnerships, but the impact on a business when partners fall out can be immense.

As a general rule the smaller the partnership, the greater the impact of a dispute on the business and the more embittered it becomes.

This is probably because larger partnerships are more likely to have agreed procedures to deal circumstances likely to cause disputes.

Finding a better bank

Since the Cruickshank review on banking services in the UK was published in 2000, banking for small businesses has become more competitive.

There is now a wider choice than just the four high street banks, as new names have entered the marketplace, including some former building societies. Both Abbey and the Alliance & Leicester have small business accounts, which are quite competitive.

All these changes mean that small businesses should compare the services of at least three banks, and perhaps internet or telephone banking to find the best deal.

Expert Advice From National Hairdressers' Federation

National Hairdressers' Federation general secretary Ray Seymour answers your questions.

"In January last year my bus service was unreliable and I was often late for work. Because of this I received a written warning even though it wasn’t my fault. Last week I was late two days in a row because of the bus and I have already been warned about this and my boss says if it happens again I will be sacked. Can he do this?"

In general, you are responsible for getting to work on time and if the bus service is erratic then you have to take that into account. However, you are only required to take reasonable steps and not be clairvoyant or exceptional.

Warnings should come with a time limit attached, which would normally be six or 12 months. A warning issued 15 months ago can’t now be used in a disciplinary hearing today, even if it is for the same reason.

If an employer wants to dismiss a person for breaking or ignoring a warning then it should be a final written warning, and action should only be taken after a proper investigation has taken place and a disciplinary hearing held.

Spotting trends before they become mainstream has been the key to success for many, and for Paul Windle of the Windle salon in London’s Covent Garden, it has been instrumental to the development of his business.

Bringing London style to the suburbs has been the key to success for one Surrey-based salon group.

When Paul Scully decided to open a salon of his own he knew exactly what he was looking for – a suburban area lacking big city salon style. Godalming in Surrey – a small, wealthy town on the outskirts of the bigger, more commercial town of Guildford – fitted the bill perfectly.
In 2002, after nearly 20 years in the hairdressing industry working for Vidal Sassoon in London, then John Carne and Hair Associates in Surrey, Paul joined forces with Des Moore, the entrepreneurial husband of one of his clients, and opened the first Scully Scully salon in a three-storey listed building in Godalming high street.

Complying To Fire Regulations

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Regulations came into force on 1 October 2006, rendering all existing fire certificates void.

The new regulations require the majority of property occupiers to carry out a fire risk assessment and comply with its recommendations or face hefty fines and/or imprisonment.

They will either repeal or amend most of the current legislation and effectively replace it with a new single-risk, assessment-based approach.

Bullying In The Workplace

Bullying is not just a problem for the school playground. It haunts the workplace too, with at least one in four people claiming to have been persecuted at work over the past five years.

And the suffering extends beyond the victims. British businesses are footing the bill for 18.9 million lost working days a year because of intimidation, according to the employment advisory service Acas.

The good news is that as the problem has grown so have the information and support networks to help both victims and employers. Most prominent of the helplines is the Andrea Adams Trust, an anti-bullying charity named which organises the Ban Bullying at Work Day.

The Truth About Employment Tribunals

The thought of facing an employment tribunal is enough to fill a salon owner with fear, but new research shows that only a small percentage of plaintiffs are successful

UK employers spend in the region of £210m a year on employment tribunal claims, but that’s nothing compared to what could be in store in the near future. This figure is predicted to rise by 70% to £360m once age discrimination legislation comes into force in October 2006.

However, claims against employers in employment tribunals have dropped to 86,181 a year, according to the latest figures published by the government. The significant reduction is in line with the underlying downward trend that has been evident over the past five years, and that, in an increasing culture of compensation, is great news for employers.

Women Less Likely To Report Illness

Women who have children, a husband or partner and go to work are less likely to report ill health than women who stay at home, according to a study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

The research says women who have been homemakers for all or most of their lives are the most likely to say they have poor health, followed by single mothers and childless women.

It also discovered that superwomen with hectic lifestyles are less likely to be obese in their 50s than long-term homemakers, unmarried or childless women.

Tony Rizzo started his first salon with his brothers in Knightsbridge, now he’s running the global business single-handed

Tony, Ozzie and Ricci Rizzo trained in Mayfair, so knew the area well and decided to open their first Sanrizz salon there. “It was difficult to get a lease without existing business records, and landlords didn’t look favourably on hairdressers. We were forced to take on large premiums,” Tony recalls. They opened their salon in Brook Street in 1980, closely followed by two more in the area.
However, when rents went through the roof they moved to Knightsbridge in 1985. “We had to pay £65,000 just to get into the area, but it was worth every penny,” says Tony.

Pornography in the Salon

The existence of pornography in the workplace leaves employers open to allegations of sex discrimination. How should salons treat the subject?

In a study conducted by Queen’s University in Belfast of 350 companies across the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, one-third of workers admitted sending pornography to others.

And, half of all workers said they had been exposed to sexually-explicit material by co-workers.

With an increasing number of businesses granting employees unlimited access to the internet, these figures reflect a disturbing trend, against which employers need to take action.

Despite a turbulent first year in business, central London salon Inanch has overcome everything fate has thrown its way to become a successful enterprise.

Inanch opened its doors on 21 June last year, but the concept was born much earlier. After 14 years of working in a salon in London’s West End, Inanch decided it was time to start her own business and set about finding suitable premises in central London. Seeing the potential in the idea and keen to support his partner, her husband Joe left his job as marketing manager at Warner Village Cinemas to join the new venture and concentrate on the business side of the salon.

Providing an ‘experience’ rather than just a haircut in your salon has never been more important, according to new research.

A study, commissioned by design agency Coley Porter Bell to understand how consumers perceive luxury, showed that more than half of the respondents rated an experience, such as personal pampering, as the ultimate luxury – even rating it over material goods such as cars and designer clothes.

With everyone wanting a little luxury in their lives, make sure you’ve got something to offer your clients to prevent them from searching for their luxury elsewhere.

Umberto Giannini

Not only was Umberto Giannini the youngest hairdresser to ever win British Hairdresser of the Year in 1999, but he also instilled a sense of belief in everyone who met him that anything was possible. However, his life was cut short when tragically he died a year later at the age of 32, leaving behind a hairdressing legacy.
“When Umberto died it had a huge impact on the business and the group did wonder if it had a future,” says head of sales and marketing Philip Sharp.

Expert Advice on Holidays and Physical Contact

I want to go on holiday but my boss has refused to give me the time off. I haven’t had any holiday yet this year, so can he stop me going?

Holiday entitlement is a statutory right, but time off must be taken with the approval of the employer.

This is in most contracts of employment, but the employee’s notice to take leave must be at least twice as long as the holiday to be taken.

If the employer wishes to object to that date he must notify the employee within the time requested for holiday, starting from the date that the request for leave is received.

So, if you want a two-week holiday then you must give at least four weeks’ notice. If he does not want you to take that holiday then he must, in this example, tell you within two weeks of receiving your holiday request.

If you disregard your employer and take the holiday even though no time off has been granted, then you can face disciplinary action for unauthorised absence and for failing to comply with a lawful instruction, in this case to attend work.

Such wilful disregard for the employer’s instructions is normally viewed very seriously and could lead to dismissal on the first offence.
