We caught up with Akin to find out more about his signature style and how he reinvents his trademarks for each new collection - including his colourful 2012 entry.
What is your signature look?
"My signature look has to be the bob.
"Bobs come in all different shapes and lengths, and can be cut in so many varied ways. I find it a personal challenge to create a new bob for my collection each year."
Why the bob?
"Every collection needs to be a display of not just your creativity, but also your technical skills. A bob will stretch you, demanding technique and also the underestimated skill of recognising when something looks great, not ordinary.
"When I was an apprentice in the 1980s, there was a stylist with a short black bob who let me practice on her for years until it became one of my favourite hairstyles.
"Apart from my signature bob, it is important that the looks you create are recognisable as coming from you, but not so much that you become predictable. I like to evolve each of my collections just enough so people may say, 'I think that is Akin's...but I'm not sure."
