Celebrities bring to life 2012 hair trends There's no better advertisement for hair trends than celebrities, with experimental A-listers providing the perfect way to tempt clients into trying a new on-trend look.

From cut and colour to styling, nothing makes a trend more wearable than a celebrity rocking it on the red carpet.

Here are the hair trends that we spotted in 2012 - and the very best examples of celebrities wearing them well.

Hot off the Spring/Summer 2012 catwalks and going strong into the new season thanks to Downton Abbey, the upcoming remake of The Great Gatsby and The Artist, 1920s style was a firm favourite this year.

A perennial catwalk favourite, ponytails provide an ideal laidback red carpet look that can be dressed up or down depending on position, texture and finish - from wavy, loose and low to strict, shiny and high.

An ideal option for fans of the gamine look, sleek hair combines a hint of the 1920s trend with a slightly 80s feel for a style that's cool, sexy and show-stopping. One for the beautiful and the brave, this look takes no prisoners.

Kate Moss never stops inspiring catwalk styles and this year it was her Johnny Depp-dating, leopard print-wearing, grunge incarnation that got designers and hair teams talking. Artfully unkempt with bags of texture and a matte finish, this cool-girl look never gets old.

As well as the 1920s trend, this year saw celebrities look to the past with inspiration from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Beehives, elegant updos and classic chignons all dominated with braver celebrities even attempting victory rolls and fingerwaves.

The fringe has never been bigger, with blunt styles in statement shades and eyebrow-skimming lengths making a statement throughout the Autumn/Winter 2012 season. Worn long and parted or high on the forehead, fringes transformed any style this year for a fashion-forward edge.

Gothic glamour was one of the key catwalk trends for the season, combining dark otherworldly beauty with a hint of retro styling. Take your cue from stars like Lana Del Rey for a salon-friendly take on the vamp look

Celebrities know the statement that short hair makes, and whether cropped for a film role or in the aftermath of a breakup, a host of stars have gone short and sweet over the course of 2012 with versatile looks that inspire clients.

The colour effect that refuses to die, the dip has seen no signs of slowing down with celebrities opting for vibrant contrasting lengths, natural-looking ombre and even rainbow-hued finishes inspired by London's most colourful salon, Bleach.

Pastel hues prove that there's no shortage of celebrities out there willing to make a statement, with purple, pink and blue as common a sight on the red carpet as blondes and brunettes.
