Fashion week insiders: leo bancroft leo bancroft session stylistLeo Bancroft is an award-winning hairdresser, in-demand celebrity stylist and one of TV's favourite hairdressers thanks to his appearances on shows including This Morning and The Salon.

A master of beautiful, wearable, editorial hair, here Leo shares his backstage secrets for wannabe session stylists everywhere.

What are the five key items/products in your kit you couldn't survive without?

  • Dry Shampoo
  • Bungee Bands
  • Aerate 8 Bodifying Cream-Mousse by Redken
  • Mason and Pearson brush
  • Headplay Pliable Working Spray by Redken

What trends are you predicting for A/W 2012?

I think hair will be softer and effortless but still polished in the coming season. It will be less bed-head and more groomed, but still relaxed. It's all about clean, healthy hair with a more subtle use of colour.

What was your favourite show last season?

The Missoni show is always pretty spectacular. The subtle tonal shades in the hair balanced out the signature Missoni vibrancy to create a blend that worked effortlessly.

4. What's your favourite trend for S/S 2012??

I'm loving the sport luxe look. It's a trend that can be incorporated into the salon and translated into an everyday style for clients. Side and centre partings are key for sleek hair, and accessories should be kept to a minimum.

5. Three top tips for getting involved with session work?

  • Build a decent portfolio as an assistant. Take any opportunity you can to get behind a camera. Networking is hugely important to make your own opportunities.
  • Go to an agency and listen. These guys know what is needed for session work and it might be that all the creative shots you have are surplus as it is a strong editorial look they want to see.
  • Join organisations that already have a relationship and understanding of fashion week. By proving your work and dedication to these guys will help you step up the ladder.

6. Top London Fashion Week post-show hangout?

I don't go to the after show parties. Working backstage is full-on and afterwards I just want to get some space and relax. If you have a show the next day you need to be fresh - you only get one chance to make a good impression.
