We've still got the Oscars and the Brits to look forward to, but this year's red carpet events have so far provided a wealth of style inspiration and wearable, A list-approved translations of catwalk trends.

Here are our favourite red carpet hairstyles from 2012 so far...

Power ponytails

"With all the overdone styles we are used to seeing on the red carpet, the simplicity of a beautiful ponytail is a refreshing alternative. Hair swept away from the face can give the illusion of an instant face lift, making this natural style perfect for celebrities facing the paparazzi. It can be glammed up with accessories and worn high for impact, or it can create a soft, feminine appeal - as Camilla Belle wonderfully shows off."
Neil Atkinson, Mahogany Hairdressing

Asymmetric looks

"The asymmetric look oozes sophistication and elegance while at the same time being simple and relatively easy to achieve. It's a great style for any age and face shape as it can be adapted to suit the individual. As well as being a soft look, the asymmetric style will open up the face and isn't too severe, making it one of the hottest trends of the moment for the red carpet."

Braided updos

"Plaits are a brilliant way to add interest to any style and these stars show that they're not just for Summer days and boho looks. There definitely seems to be a revival of plaits on the red carpet and it's a great way of making a statement. For me, plaits are ultra-feminine, they enhance multi-tonal hair and look glamorous and sexy. Best of all, you don't have to be blessed with super long locks to get the look; there are loads of temporary extension pieces available now to help you cheat your way to divine hair."
Julia Gaudio, Elajé Hair & Beauty, Cambridge

Chic crops

"Short crops are worn polished and groomed on the red carpet this season. The looks are pure and graceful, but can be transformed into something less polished and more textured for those after parties. Cuts can be tailored to stand out and offer an element of surprise, and can equally be tweaked with colour to add weight and depth to shorter styles."
