2011 salon design of the year winner: angels

It takes creative flair, a sensational concept and an awe-inspiring finished look to lift the Salon Design of the Year Award at HJ's British Hairdressing Business Awards.

Tracey Devine, whose Schoolhills Angels salon scooped the 2011 Salon Design accolade explains what made her entry stand out from the crowd.

What was your budget?

We got it all together for just under £100.

Did you work alone or with an interior design company?

We worked with our PR consultancy; Gorgeous and for design; Creative Impact here in Aberdeen.

What was the process and how long did it take?

As we'd never entered an award for this category it was very much back to the drawing board - but I had great help so it doesn't take long. Two months from start to finish.

About the Salon Design

What do you feel makes your salon stand out from the crowd?

We were up against some absolutely stunning salons that had the luxury of spending enormous budgets so I didn't dream we had a chance. I tend to think we scored highly because of what we did achieve on such a small budget and our total focus on client comfort.

Did you take any inspiration from other salons?

Not at all. We wanted ours to be different.

Was there any inspiration from outside the industry?

Yes, I've always liked the lightness of being in a really cool hotel lobby.

Describe the style in 3 words?

Finger on pulse!

Is there anything you would have done differently?

Done it a lot sooner!
