Backstage and on-stage celebrity style at v festival 2011

V Festival is renowned for attracting a well-coiffed crowd and the 2011 event was no exception, with celebrities including Rihanna, Daisy Lowe and Jessie J bringing some A-list glamour to the three-day event.

We asked Martin Crean at MODE, Chipping Campden, to give us his verdict on the stylish stars both on-stage and backstage.

Daisy Lowe
Daisy's hair has a rich shine and I love her blunt fringe. She's really working the festival grunge trend well - although I have a feeling she may have needed the help of a Tangle Teezer the next morning.

Jessie J
At last, a celebrity who isn't afraid of taking hair risks. Jessie's vibrant purple shade is stunning and suits her sleek bob perfectly; it's not a long-lasting style but one that is certainly very fun and festival-appropriate.

Chloe Moretz
I love Chloe's relaxed bohemian, beach babe waves and they work well with her fresh look. She has accessorised them perfectly with this cute daisy chain headband, which will also craftily stop flyaways in the festival wind!

Jameela Jamil
Does Jameela Jamil ever get it wrong? Her hair is so shiny and lustrous, and that little fringe parting is so cute. Jameela's hair is well maintained - Kérastase Paris Reflection Chroma Reflect Radiance Enhancing Milk will give clients this high velocity shine.

Dionne Bromfield
I think Dionne's side pony is a bit overdone. Her ponytail looks very tonged and the highlights aren't flattering to her complexion. I'd love to see her with a more relaxed style; possibly a loose side plait or topknot.

Shingai Shoniwa
Speaking of which... Shingai is working one fierce bun. This drawn-back style has the ability to look a little chavvy, but by fixing it a little off centre it's chic, cool and such a statement. Not for the faint-hearted though.

Frankie Sandford
I'm not sure Frankie has the fashion kudos to pull off her pixie cut. Her colour is beautiful and the caramel shimmer is perfect with her dark eyes, but I'd be inclined to add some texture and volume as it's looking quite flat and lifeless here.

Pixie Lott
I commend her daring attitude, but Pixie's hair leaves me perplexed. The length and style do absolutely nothing for her and age her terribly. A long bob would have been much more appropriate and flattering. Love the facepaint though.

Eliza Doolittle
Oh Eliza, a deep conditioning treatment and frizz serum is very much needed here. She's working a very 90s style, and I'm not sure if this is intentional. Curls need lots of management to ensure they look healthy and frizz-free, a keratin smoothing treatment would relax those curls into a softer, smoother style.

Rihanna
Now this is how to work curls - does Rihanna ever put a step wrong? The multi-tonal colour adds so much depth and warmth to her face and I love the hint of dark root coming through.

KT Tunstall
I think the very severe dip-dye look has had its moment and I think KT's style is a bit brutal for her skintone. A softer, ribboning technique would have lightened and added depth and shimmer to her style without the dramatic and unforgiving graduation.

Katy B
This is a gorgeous colour but is let down slightly by dry, over processed hair. Katy's locks look like they're dying for a conditioning treatment. Finishing the style with a good smoothing and shine product like Shu Uemura Art of Hair Silk Oil.

tulisa-v-festival-2011.jpg
Imelda May
I love Imelda May and I'm a big fan of the vintage looks that are still doing the rounds at the moment but I think this is looking a bit too full of product. On this occasion it can be forgiven because it's a festival but I'd like to see her with a slightly softer wave around her face as this is quite harsh.

Tulisa
The power ponytail will be everywhere this season and Tulisa has added a slightly urban (and dare I say it, Cheryl Cole) twist to her style with a little volume  and some highlights at the hairline. My only negative - her hair extensions haven't been disguised enough and the blunt end looks very false. Adding layers and taking the weight out of the ends this would have looked much more natural.
