Buns are hotter than ever this summer, and while the easy-breezy updo is ideal for staying cool and chic on the beach it's also the ideal choice for a red carpet reception.

Perfect for showing off sparkling earrings and fabulous frocks, the top knot can be customised for each client - from loose, boho and framed with flyways to chic, neat and ballerina-inspired.

Here are some of our favourite celebrity buns and top knots for summer styles...

Thandie Newton
The beauty of this bun on Thandie is the simplicity, which makes it very easy to achieve. Simply tie the hair into a ponytail at the back, side or top and then use a doughnut bun ring to shape. This style is perfect on Thandie because of her oval face shape, but it could be too harsh on others. The overall look could easily be softened with clothes, earrings and make-up, as Thandie has done here.

Jessica Lowndes
This classic updo is striking and looks fabulous with the right outfit. It's very easy to achieve and is a great holiday look. To achieve this hair up, all you need is a hair doughnut, grips and hair spray. Comb the hair up into a high, tight ponytail using hairspray to give a clean and sharp finish. Attach the doughnut with grips to the base and use more grips to wrap and secure the rest of the hair neatly around the doughnut.

Kara Tointon
I think Kara's style would suit her better if it wasn't so big - it's a case of a little less being a lot more in this case. Buns are very in at the moment, and it's an exceptional look for red-carpet events as well as for proms and the upcoming wedding season. To me, this look is a classic, and with its sudden popularity it will be interesting to see how many people opt for this style for their special events in the upcoming months.

Lauren Conrad
Buns have been big on the Spring/Summer catwalks, brought even more into fashion by the film Black Swan. These looks tend to filter down through celebs then become the must-have street style. Lauren's version of the ballerina bun is current and on-trend and suits her petite facial features perfectly. Worn slightly dishevelled with a fresh complexion, it's the ideal Summer style. Take the trend up a notch by plaiting the hair before putting it into a bun to rock this season's dual hot hairstyles: buns and texture.
