Red carpet hairstyles: 2011 bafta film awards While the Grammys took place in Los Angeles, London also saw its fair share of Hollywood glamour with the 2011 BAFTA film award ceremony. Stars of the silverscreen including Emma Watson, Jessica Alba, and Rachel Stevens took a turn up the red carpet for a night of movie magic.

We asked Warren Holmes from Nicky Clarke to share his thoughts on the hottest looks of the evening.

Harry Potter stars Bonnie Wright and Emma Watson have firmly shaken off their Hogwarts history, rocking glamorous looks on the red carpet. Although we still love Emma's crop, it's starting to grow out a little now, and has lost some of its original impact. Bonnie's hair is all about the colour - the styling doesn't particularly wow, but the colour speaks for itself.

Plaits continue to be a popular trend, with both Edith Bowman and Jessica Alba opting for Heidi-style braids across the head. "Jessica Alba had fun with her hair," says Warren. "She dropped a double milkmaid braid across the hairline with volume at the crown; it was girly and carefree to complement her blue Atelier Versace dress, a look not so often seen on the red carpet."

Dark and sultry was the order of the day for both Eva Green and Gemma Arteton. While Eva looked Dita-esque with tumbling waves, Gemma kept her styling simple with piles of body. Warren says: "With her recent campaign with GStar and her appearance at New York Fashion Week, Gemma us becoming somewhat of a fashion icon. The fashion industry love her and you can see why."

"She went for a Bardot inspired look, with the ends finished to look more raw. To make this look work, it's imperative the layering around the face is really long and sits just above the length. She has great hair to work with. Its thick, moves and will keep shape; a perfect style for her face shape."

As for Eva, Warren says: "Many people go for this look and fail with the wayit's styled around the face, but Eva nails it here! Her make up isperfectly complemented, as is her dress. It's crucial that you usea heated roller or two at the front in a triangular section to get the heightand movement to form a quiff at the front."

Both Jameela Jamil and Rachel Stevens rocked thick, heavy fringes. Warren says: "Rachael Stevens went for a commercial look; an offset low ponytail and fringe." This look has been seen on quite a few red carpet stars this season - it's great to see a slightly edgier style like this chunky fringe being worn by so many A-listers, who are starting to experiment with the more fashionable side of styling.

Along with Bonnie Wright, Julianne Moore and Amy Adams prove that glossy red is the hair colour to be seen with this season. Warren says: "Julianne Moore looked absolutely stunning. Elegant, decadent and cool all rolled into one. She has made that Veronica Lake barrelled curl her own; slightly modernising it by the placement of the parting."

"Amy Adams, up for best actress, has a great natural colour to her hair. She's cool, knows what's going on on the runway and tries things with her hair. Here she wears her hair tonged away from the face with a central parting to keep it young. Easy and safe but still effective with lots of curl."

Rosamund Pike looked glam with long blonde waves, while rising star Hailee Steinfeld is getting plenty of experience at posing on the red carpet in 2011. Warren says: "Hailee Steinfeld, nominated for her performance in True Grit, is starting to really work the red carpet - and at just 14 years old! She wore her hair up and off her face to state her elegance but it didn't take anything away from her youthful innocence. She looked wonderful in her Miu Miu dress."

Two of Girls Aloud made a glamorous appearance at the BAFTAs, with Kimberley Walsh presenting and Sarah Harding as a glitzy guest. Kimberley's va-va-voom extensions add to her super-sexy look, although they are perhaps a tiny bit obvious!

Sarah's also rocking a plaited style, although I would have preferred it bough down on the forehead slightly for a look with more impact.

The always-chic Thandie Newton sported a low ballerina bun, while Emma Stone kept things short and simple with a curly bob.

Warren says: "Thandie Newton's look was all about that Monique Lhuillier dress, so it was crucial the hair was up and exposing the neckline, creating the perfect silhouette. A big trend for Spring/Summer 2011 is tight updos - I call them small updos packed tight onto the head.  Hair should also reflect light; Thandie had both of these elements running through her hairstyle."

"I love Emma Stone because I like the fact that it was kind of wrong and right in one. She went for a 1920s inspired set that can be achieved either by using medium Velcro rollers or medium curling tongs. It clearly wasn't a perfectly formed set; it was more dishevelled, hands running through it with a messy edge. I liked it and it worked for her."
