X factor 2010 hair: dannii vs cheryl HJI Hearts logo.bmpFrom Cheryl Cole's Princess Leia buns to Danni Minogue's constant reinvention of the bob, X Factor 2010 was as much about the judge's hair as the contestant's vocals.

We asked Rae Palmer, Schwarzkopf Ambassador and owner of the stylish Rae Palmer salon in Southsea, to give us her opinion on some of Cheryl and Dannii's best looks from the series.

Cheryl

Cheryl shocked her fans - and boosted sales of red hair dye by double - this season when she unveiled her new look.

For the first live show of the season, Cheryl revealed a bright purple-red hue, styled in an on-trend fishtail plait.

"I love the rich claret red," says Rae. "The fishtail plait has been a key trend this year, and this style really suits Cheryl's look."

As the series progressed, Cheryl's shade become a little more subtle - and as her dresses got more extravagant, her hairstyles got a little more simple. "This loose ponytail is pretty," says Rae, "and I like the undone feel to her look."

When Cheryl isn't experimenting with updos and finishes, she can always be relied on to get a big, beautiful blow-dry right.

"Cheryl is renowned for big gorgeous hair," says Rae of this curly style. "I love her glamour queen look."

However, proving that even the nation's sweetheart can't get it right every time, this slightly lacklustre look from the middle of the series doesn't quite make the grade.

"This is flat, girl-next-door hair," says Rae. "I particularly don't like the black frilly piece. I don't think its Cheryl's best."

Cheryl divided opinions with her Princess Leia buns, but were they a cute and quirky Gaga-inspired choice, or a total fashion flop?

"I think the bow is too last season," says Rae. "And it's been done too many times for it to wow. I think it's fun, but Cheryl looks more like Minnie Mouse than a style icon."

"Although the extensions don't seem to lay perfectly smooth, I much prefer the sleek and straight look."

Dannii

While Cheryl set out to shock this series with her dramatic new colour and extravagant updos, Dannii stuck to her usual cool classic style.

Proving yet again that the bob is uber-versatile, Dannii rocked different looks every week, but always with her trademark ladylike finish.

"I love the quiff," says Rae. "It shows off Dannii's face shape and makes her look fresh and youthful. However, it looks as though it needed to be smoother or more broken up as it is neither one or the other."

Showing off a hint of balayage through the ends of her hair, this feminine curly look works well with Dannii's pretty black dress. But what does Rae think?

"I'm not loving the bob. One side tucked behind the ear looks cute, but with this dress she looks too classic and it makes her look older. She should have mixed a funky catwalk updo with the classic styling."

Keeping it classic as ever, Dannii stuck to cocktail gowns and tailored shapes this season. With her own clothing line, Project D, she's almost as good as Victoria Beckham at self-promotion!

Rae says: "I like Dannii's hair when she wears it up, however I think this style is a bit of a flop, and it looks as though it needed more oomph and hold. The tonged bob is OK, but it hasn't got any X Factor to it."

Strappy dresses call for elegant updos, and Dannii is the master of putting short hair up - or at least creating a faux updo. Dramatic earrings each week complemented Dannii's look.

"I'm not loving the hair up on the left - it's not a statement like the plait on the right. I love the shape of this updo and its sophistication. Adding the plait gives it a real on trend feel."

It's been a stylish season, but who does Rae think has the best hair overall?

"Cheryl topped the style stakes for me on this year's X Factor. I loved the gorgeous red tones that she tried this season, and she experimented with lots of different glamorous looks."

"That said, Dannii's colour looked amazing this season, and the two-tone technique is so on trend. She only just missed out!"
