Rich reds are a new celebrity favourite for winter 2010 HJI Hearts logo.bmprihanna-red-curly-hair.jpgRed hair has enjoyed a huge revival throughout 2010, but while summer months called for fiery coppers, this winter it's all about deep, rich, luxurious jewel tones.

Velvety shades of luxurious ruby and claret have taken over from the 'fake' shades of primary red we saw this summer, and while Florence Welch-inspired coppers are still a favourite, it's Cheryl Cole's plummy purple shade that's sweeping salons nationwide.

"There's a new-found passion for reds taking hold. Not the soft pale coppers we've seen recently, but the deep, almost fake-looking reds that are truly eye-catching," explains Josh Wood, of Josh Wood Colour.

"I think a lot of this new-found boldness comes from a need to express ourselves with a high-visibility accessory we wear every day - our hair. For me, the trailblazer for this tribe has to be supermodel/singer, Karen Elson (above)," he says.

"This deeper, blue tone can be softer than the brighter, copper alter-ego we saw in the summer and, therefore, people are more encouraged to try it out," adds Chris Williams, HJ's 2009 Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year and international colour director for Rush.

"And you have the bonus of the 'if it's good enough for Cheryl, it's good enough for me' mindset. The softer, paler complexion of the typical Brit provides the perfect contrast and so more clients are feeling brave enough to go for it."

Winter's version of the ultimate redhead is rich and intense, concentrating on the crimson spectrum of cherry, plum, violet and burgundy.

The rich and famous may have fallen in love with the ruby red and rich dark-copper options, but these shades are fantastic colour combinations for flamboyant females from all walks of life.

And although red hair looks great fresh from the salon, it does have a tendency to wash out and fade quickly. Clients today, more than ever, are looking for perceived value for money, and premature fade is bound to leave them feeling short-changed.

However tenacious the new breed of red shades, clients need to handle their chosen hue with care.

Turn them on to the benefits of dry shampoo to avoid washing too often, and leave-in anti-UV formulations. Educate them on the hazards of shade-stripping shampoos, and recommend they use a colour-specific care regime.
