TrevorSorbieHP.jpgTrevor Sorbie's My New Hair won a huge victory this month as the Secretary of State for Health, Andy Burnham announced government funding would be made available to the project.

My New Hair focuses on providing training for hairdressers to help them undertand the unique needs of cancer survivors and their hair. The charity also provides advice and information for patients and NHS staff on wig styling, hair loss and re-growth.

The Department of Health has agreed to give the charity a grant of £86,500 to help extend this programme with further training to aid hairdressers provide pre and after-care services for cancer patients, including dealing with the psychological implications involved.

Commented Trevor Sorbie: "The outward effects of cancer can often remain invisible until you start losing you hair.  What I can do is give people going through chemo a chance to feel confident and normal. When people are fit and well we look after them so when they are ill and going through chemo it is even more important for a hairdresser to be sensitive and make them feel special.  Patients suffering from cancer don't want to feel different they want to be able to go out and feel normal with hair that looks real and natural."
