autumn-trends-celebs.jpgAs temperatures start to cool down, so will hair colour as we head into the autumn/winter season, with cooler, more sophisticated brunettes and blondes.

"Small adjustments can help women update their look from season to season," says Tracey Cunningham, celebrity colourist at the Byron + Tracey Salon and Redken's creative consultant for colour. "When summer comes to a close, cool your client's shades down - move towards blue or violet, such as platinum blondes, ash browns and plum reds."

So what should the three main colour types be looking for this autumn/winter? Here is a selection of the key looks for blondes, brunettes and redheads.

Blondes

The Trend: Lady Gaga and Agyness Deyn continue to have an influence. Jo Hansford says: "Blondes will be flat and beige or cool and icy. The honey, sun-kissed shades from spring/summer will migrate into wintry platinum shade."

Alternatives: Power blondes for autumn/winter 09 take their inspiration from the 80s. Richard Ward from Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa, London, says: "Blonde is bold; bright golds, champagne bondes, warm peachy tones and cinnamon beiges work as well as classic pearls and soft creams."

Brunettes

The Trend: Well maintained, expertly conditioned and rich with intense colour molecules, brunettes reflect the light and shine. "Multi-tonal, striking all over colour in shades of walnut, teak, sable, mink and tawny tones give hair a fur-like sheen," says Richard Ward. "Colour is luxurious, with glimmers of light catching pigments in rum, claret and brandy tones."

Alternatives: Rich and vibrant, but remaining classic, darker, sold shades will be popular in line with teh block colours we are currently seeing in fashion,  says Jo Hansford. "All over tinted bases, darker lowlight or slices can be added to create interest while achieving a deep, glossy natural looking colour."

Redheads

The Trend: Reds are high-depth this season, light and sparkling, they are sun-kissed and coppery in tone. Richard Ward says: "Organic shades of russet, coral, peach, strawberry bondes, terracotta, saffron and honey, these warm toned reds complement pale skins and look natural and uncontrived."

Alternatives: Tracey Cunningham says: "The autumn/winter redhead will be more sophisticated, and playful with their shade, with deep red tones adn a few cool, blonde highlights throughout." The red revival is strong but you need to be mindful that only certain skin tones can carry off the fiery, vivid tones. "Bold, copper reds are best suited to pale, porcelain skin tones as seen on Coco Rocha and Lily Cole," says Jo Hansford.
