Farrah fawcett - celebrating a style icon

Following the sad passing of Charlie's Angels star Farrah Fawcett, we celebrate the iconic look that made her a style idol and the sweetheart of her generation.

Farrah's long flowing locks and those famous flicks created a new style that has been imitated by many, as British Hairdresser of the Year nominee Errol Douglas explains: "I loved Farrah's look, defined by her flicks and blondeness," he says.

"She became an icon because nobody had that type of hair. Fellow blondie Bo Derek went for the braided look, while Farrah was distinctive for her blonde, power style.

"She had that all American square jaw and beautiful features."

Flicks

This isn't the best picture of her flicks - this is a bit messier, but Farah was queen of the flick! Her superflick is still so now - if it's not on the red carpet it's on the high street because it's glamorous but easy to achieve. Blow dry from wet, section off, then working towards the middle, dry on the brush turning out as you go. It's all in the wrist movement. Use two hairbrushes - blow dry with one and use the other to flick into place. This is all about the middle parting as well. Cheryl Cole, Jennifer Aniston, Beyonce, Amanda Holden and Cat Deeley are also fans. I produced a flicked style for my last collection, they still look amazing.

Sleek

This is a blown out, smooth style with body but turned under. It's very accessible and wearable - think Cheryl Cole, Cat Deeley, Myleene Klass.

This type of look is easy to achieve with big round brushes, smoothing hair as you go, and big coke can rollers for the ends.

Messy with fringe

This is soft, almost a permed finish. The fringe is heavy but separated and again, it's all about the middle parting.

Flick fringes can be seen on the likes of fellow modern day Charlie's Angel Cameron Diaz, Nicole Ritchie, and Alexa Chung has a shorter version.

Big curls

This is Farah's drag queen look! This look is rough blow dried with mousse, and then tonged.

For these big barrel curls, use tongs on the vertical and wind, secure, pin back, then repeat over the whole head. Start at the back and work towards the front. Add spray every time you use the tongs.

This early way of wearing curls was emulated by Madonna in the nineties, for today's women this style would be raked through with fingers and worn looser; think Leona Lewis, Evangeline Lilly.
