Andrew barton's career in pictures

The past 25 years have been a rollercoaster ride for Andrew Barton, winning armfuls of awards, appearing on television and being one of the most likeable hairdressers of his generation.

With his down-to-earth approach, his passion to be the best and his desire to share his skills with youngsters, Andrew is one of the most popular stylists in the world.

As well as his role as international creative director for salon group Saks, Andrew is a media favourite - both in the UK and overseas - regularly appearing in consumer and trade magazines. His makeovers on TV's Ten Year's Younger are the talk of the show, and are usually the biggest transformation of all.

"I sometimes feel like the luckiest hairdresser in the world," Andrew says. "My job ticks all the right boxes and I love what I do so much."

Here are some of his favourite images and the stories behind them. Click on an image to see the full size picture (descriptions from left to right).

  • "This is a campaign I did for L'Oréal Professionnel in Paris and I love this image. It was with a female photographer - I often work with women on a shoot as there is something about the way a woman photographs a woman. They can bring out their inner beauty without it being sexual. This image is just about beautiful blonde hair."

  • "I was appointed creative director for Saks in 1999 and part of my role was to develop the company's signature looks as well as its education. This was part of my first consumer collection for Saks and it was the epitome of elegance and beauty. When I create an image it isn't about being edgy or funky but about beauty. It's easy on long hair, but this shows that short hair can be beautiful and feminine too."

  • "This image has a special place in my heart as it is from my winning 2006 HJ's British Hairdresser of the Year collection. It was all about what I enjoy doing; elegant, feminine hair. I love working with different techniques and resurrecting old techniques with a modern twist. Not long after I created this, Madonna wore heavy eyebrows and hair like this - but I got there first!"
  • "I rarely work with hair photographers; I prefer to work with beauty photographers as they look at the image in a different way. I want to create an image that is recognisable as mine and not the photographers. After all it is my hair that is being promoted."

  • "Being on TV's Ten Years Younger has created some great spin-offs for me, and this is one of them. I appeared on Ready Steady Cook with former presenter Nicky Hambleton-Jones. I made a Yorkshire pudding - and won!"

  • "This was also from my 2006 HJ's British Hairdresser of the Year collection. I was lucky enough to learn the traditional hairdressing techniques, such as finger waving, and although I hated it at the time, I am now grateful for that training. It is essential to learn the old techniques as this is what makes you a great all-round professional expert. Anyone can make hair look voluminous but getting shine and control is a lot harder. I learnt to do hair before digital enhancement so am strict on a shoot and ensure hair is perfect. Hair should never be retouched."
  • "This is an example of the sort of hair I love doing. It was for the front cover of the Express newspaper's, S Magazine. I get to do a lot of consumer hair work thanks to my agent. I love the diversity of my job."

  • "I do a lot of session work and it's often for a fashion spread for a magazine. Even if hair is minimal it is important to the overall look. Hair can't take over the image but has to blend in. It isn't all about being wacky and in-your-face.A simple image like this can make a powerful impact."

  • "Being crowned HJ's 2006 British Hairdresser of the Year was the highlight of my career. The feeling of sheer joy was overwhelming but so was the feeling of responsibility to the industry. I took the role of being ambassador seriously and felt like I did a good job."
