Tips and advice for on-trend fringes

Fringes are one of the season's must-have hairstyle trends both on the catwalk and with celebrities.

But when it comes to your clients what are the key looks for fringes and how can they best be worn for maximum impact?

"Fringes are adaptable to suit all face shapes and haircuts. The three main versions are the blunt, heavy fringe that just skims the eyes; the long, wispy boho fringe á la Kate Moss; and the ultra-short pixie fringe of the boyish crop.

"I think a choppy, chunky fringe, worn quite long, will be the most on-trend way to wear it this season.

"Fringes are easy to maintain. It just needs trimming every three weeks to keep the perfect length, and after blow-drying, apply a tiny bit of product to texturise it."

Victor Pajak, Headquarters Hair Salon, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey

"A thick-cut fringe is perfect for the less daring client who is still looking for a change in the New Year. However, for those a bit more fashion focused, I would suggest something more definite, taking inspiration from Lily Allen: a blunt and chunky fringe is the key to a seriously on-trend haircut.

"This season, how you tailor fringes to suit your client will determine the look. Styles will vary from thick and blunt, to wispy and natural, depending on your clients' hair type and style. Glossy locks and a statement fringe are the essentials to start 2009."

Mark Leeson, Mark Leeson Hair, Body & Mind, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire

"Fringes are going to be a huge commercial hit with clients this year. The key will be making your clients' fringes accessible so that they can be styled in different ways.

"Katy Perry's look and fringe is bang on trend: it is perfect as it suits her face shape and defines her features."

Clive Johnston, Clive Alexander, Enniskillen, Northern Ireland
