How to create the perfect redhead

Marcia-Cross-redhead.jpgRadiant redheads are simple when you know how, but get it wrong and the results are disastrous.

Karine Jackson from Karine Jackson Hair & Beauty, London, explains how to create the ultimate redheads.

Do...

  • Consider colour fade

Going from blonde to red looks great as you get amazing vibrancy, but it fades very quickly as the hair is porous and doesn't hold the colour. Red pigment is the smallest and doesn't lock into the hair as well.

  • Encourage your client to use regular treatments

It is important to keep red hair in really good condition. Encourage weekly colour treatments to prolong colour.

  • Protect red hair from the sun

Exposing hair in the sun will quickly fade the red, so encourage protective products, tying up hair and wearing a hat.

  • Work with the skin tone

Have a good look at the client's skin tone and eye colouring so you can get the best natural looking result, that is also striking - a key point to red hues.

  • Be careful when choosing your red

If your client has a warm skin tone you can easily make them look flushed in the face. If their complexion is already warm opt for cooler reds. Reds with blue bases such as mahogany, plum reds and burgundies are perfect. If a complexion is cool go for coppers, chestnut and more orange-based colours.

  • Prepare your clients for regular visits to the salon for top-up colour

If your client wants to make a statement then going very bright and slightly artificial looking should do the trick. However, this will fade more quickly so make sure they're prepared for the maintenance.

Don't...

  • Put red colours over grey hair

This will result in an artificial looking colour. If the hair is porous on the ends use a pre-colour treatment to even the hair's porosity so you can achieve the best result with the least amount of colour fade.

  • Take colour through to the ends unless it really needs it

Too much colour on the ends will dry the hair and encourage colour fade.

  • Forget to apply a treatment straight after the colour

This will shut down the cuticle, locking in the colour better.

  • Underestimate the impact redheads have on bright colours

Clothes choice is important when changing hair colour dramatically. Things that used to suit your client might not any more. Beware of this as it could put them off the new colour. The right colour clothing will set off the hair colour amazingly, so advise clients that pinks can make you look dowdy where greens can look striking.

  • Forget about make-up

The client's foundation base might have to change, along with their lipstick colour. If your salon offers make-up then colour transformations are the ideal time to demonstrate this on your client - chances are they'll buy the new product as they can immediately see that it suits them.
