Finding the right site for a new salon is one of the biggest challenges faced by anyone looking to launch an enterprise or expand an existing business.
There are a huge number of boxes that need ticking before it’s time to sign on the dotted line. For example, does a location have the potential clientele you are looking for? Does the site offer room for expansion as business increases? What competition exists in the local area – and will you offer something different?
Sites that fit all, or even most, of your criteria are hard to come by – especially if price is an issue, which is why it's essential to have a clear idea of what you are looking for and what will complement your vision for the salon before you begin:- Do your research. Do the kind of people you want to attract live in the area?
- Think about buying a freehold property rather than a short-term leasehold or renting – such properties are harder to come by, but are a long-term investment.
- Size does matter. Think about how much space you need now and whether the property offers room for expansion as the business grows.
- Have other commercial properties in the area been extended without planning permission problems?
- Decide on your price limit and don’t stray over it.
- Shop around – your dream site may not be in the town or city you thought you’d find it.
